Colorado Avalanche superstar center Nathan MacKinnon is universally recognized as one of the most dominant, explosive, and hyper-driven hockey players on the planet. His trophy case includes a Stanley Cup ring, a Hart Trophy, and multiple 100+ point seasons.
However, behind the highlights and MVP hardware lies a personality and leadership style that insiders and former teammates describe as unforgivingly intense.
Avalanche Star Nathan MacKinnon’s Intensity Isn’t for Everyone
The Avalanche finished the 2025-26 regular season with the best record in the league, posting a 55-16-11 mark and collecting 121 points to claim the Presidents’ Trophy. Despite those accomplishments, Colorado’s season ended in disappointment with a sweep at the hands of the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final.
NHL insider Jimmy Murphy believes the disappointing finish has raised questions about whether the Avalanche need to make significant changes.
According to the veteran insider, MacKinnon’s demanding nature has occasionally worn on some of his teammates. “After this season came out, it was a lot of times during the playoffs and during games, we would see Nathan MacKinnon really reeling into his teammates, whether it’s on the ice or on the bench,” Murphy noted.
“Everybody respects the fact that he is one of, if not the most passionate players and most dedicated players in the NHL; I’d say it’s between him and Sidney Crosby, in my opinion,” he added.
Murphy explained that highly driven superstars often expect everyone around them to operate at the same level of commitment and intensity. “Sometimes what happens is superstars expect a little too much from their teammates. I’ve been told by people within the organization that is the case with Nathan MacKinnon. And at times it’s rubbed some of the teammates the wrong way.”
He emphasized that there is no major conflict within the organization, but he questioned whether Colorado needs to reshape its leadership structure after several years of falling short of another Stanley Cup Final appearance. He even suggested that defenseman Cale Makar could eventually become the face of the franchise.
In essence, Murphy raised the possibility that the Avalanche may need to make significant changes to their core rather than simply adjusting the roster around the edges.
A Difficult Personality or a Championship Mentality?
MacKinnon’s intensity has been well documented throughout his career. Whether it’s his famously strict diet, his demanding practice habits, or his visible frustration during games, the Avalanche star has never hidden his desire to win.
Like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, MacKinnon demands the very best from the people around him because he expects nothing less from himself. His leadership style may not appeal to everyone, but it is also one of the reasons the Avalanche remain among the NHL’s elite teams.
The bigger question for Colorado is whether the current core still has what it takes to bring another Stanley Cup to Denver.
