The uncertainty surrounding Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin continues to dominate the NHL rumor mill.
After Larkin requested a trade following years of frustration over Detroit’s inability to make the playoffs, speculation about the veteran center’s future has been simmering nonstop.
Even so, the Red Wings appear determined not to rush into a deal. According to longtime Detroit insider Helene St. James, the organization has drawn a firm line when it comes to the type of return it expects.

St. James recently revealed that Detroit’s front office has little interest in rebuilding through draft picks alone.
“The Wings really want value-now players in return, not draft picks or prospects,” St. James said. “To accept the latter would be sending a signal to Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider that the Wings are in rebuild mode.”
That approach makes sense for a franchise that believes its young core is ready to compete.
Raymond and Seider have become the faces of Detroit’s next generation, and management has no desire to send a message that the team is taking a step backward. The organization reportedly demonstrated its intentions during discussions with the Minnesota Wild, where Detroit’s asking price was believed to include star winger Matt Boldy.
That demand made one thing clear: moving Larkin will not come cheap.
The Red Wings captain signed an eight-year, $69.6 million contract extension in 2023 that carries an annual cap hit of $8.7 million. The deal also includes a full no-trade clause, giving Larkin significant control over where he could end up.
Reports have linked him to a handful of contenders, including the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, Florida Panthers, and Dallas Stars.
Despite the growing speculation, two major hurdles continue to stand in the way of a deal.
The first is the salary cap. Nearly all of Larkin’s preferred destinations have limited financial flexibility, meaning any trade would require salary retention, a third team, or the departure of established players.
The second issue is Detroit’s front-office situation.
Following Steve Yzerman’s move into a senior advisory role, interim general manager Shawn Horcoff has taken over day-to-day responsibilities. However, reports indicate that ownership wants a permanent general manager in place before approving a major transaction.
As a result, the situation appears to be at a standstill.
With training camp drawing closer, many around the league believe Larkin will remain in Detroit for the time being. Unless one of his preferred destinations presents an offer built around proven NHL talent, the Red Wings appear prepared to remain patient rather than accept a deal that falls short of their expectations.
