Wayne Gretzky Gives LA Kings a Reality Check After Digging 0-3 Hole Vs. Colorado Avalanche

The Los Angeles Kings are teetering on the edge of elimination after falling into a 0–3 hole against the Colorado Avalanche. They are putting in the effort, but the pattern has stayed the same, with costly lapses at the worst times. Despite playing well against the league’s top team, the scoreboard continues to tell a different story. Now, the Kings face the harsh reality of a season hanging by a thread.

The weight of this situation has drawn a blunt assessment from ‘The Great One’ himself. Wayne Gretzky’s latest take feels less like analysis and more like a reality check for a team searching for answers.

Amid Kings’ Scoring Struggles Against Avalanche, Wayne Gretzky Delivers Blunt Reality Check

The message from Gretzky offered a clear and direct read on the Kings’ position after their Game 3 loss on Thursday. Speaking during an NHL on TNT segment, he pointed to the one area that continues to hold Los Angeles back from turning solid efforts into wins.

“Score,” Gretzky said when host Liam McHugh asked what the Kings can do differently. It soon followed with a laugh from everyone, following which Gretzky joked, “I’m a genius, aren’t I?”

Gretzky also discussed the Kings’ situation on a more serious note, saying, “You guys just said it best. L.A. is playing their hearts out, and they’re happy to be playing the best team in the National Hockey League right now, and that makes it tough.”

Los Angeles has not been outclassed in effort or structure, but their inability to finish chances has kept them chasing games. Across three contests, they have struggled to convert opportunities, while Colorado has made the most of its moments.

Game 3 followed that same script. Gabriel Landeskog opened the scoring, and although Trevor Moore responded to keep the game within reach, momentum shifted once again. Cale Makar’s point shot restored Colorado’s lead, and a short-handed goal from Artturi Lehkonen created further separation. Even with a late push driven by Adrian Kempe, the Kings could not close the gap, and Brock Nelson scored on an empty net for the final score.

Despite the 0-3 deficit, the Kings have not looked overwhelmed. Two of the three losses came by a single goal margin, showing that the gap between the teams is narrow. However, as Gretzky pointed out, keeping pace is not enough at this stage. Finishing remains the difference.

Looking ahead to Game 4, the challenge becomes even sharper. Only a handful of teams in league history have recovered from a 3-0 deficit, placing Los Angeles in a difficult position. The path forward requires more than effort; it demands execution in the moments that have slipped away so far.
