‘It Would Break The Internet’ — Radko Gudas To Maple Leafs Rumor Is Getting The Exact Reaction You’d Expect From NHL Fans

Radko Gudas' reported link to Toronto sparks strong reactions from fans and analysts as free agency speculation heats up.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are trying to move past a disappointing season while reshaping the makeup of their roster. As the organization searches for more bite on the blueline, veteran defenseman Radko Gudas has unexpectedly entered the conversation. His name checks many of the boxes Toronto appears to value under its new leadership group.

Yet this isn’t a routine free-agent rumor. Because of Gudas’ history with the Maple Leafs and Auston Matthews, the speculation has quickly become one of the most polarizing storylines of the summer.

Radko Gudas-to-Maple Leafs Buzz Sparks Exactly the Response NHL Fans Saw Coming

Gudas has become an unexpected talking point in Toronto after NHL insider Kevin Weekes reported that the Anaheim Ducks captain is drawing interest from multiple teams. According to Weekes, if Gudas and Anaheim fail to reach an extension, both the Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers could emerge as legitimate contenders for the veteran defenseman.

The connection is easy to understand, given the Maple Leafs’ plans. Toronto’s new leadership group, led by general manager John Chayka and head coach Jim Hiller, is focused on building a tougher and more difficult team to play against.

The problem is that fans remember exactly who Gudas is.

Just a few months ago, the veteran defenseman received a 5-game suspension after a knee-on-knee collision that resulted in a season-ending injury for Matthews. The incident created significant bad blood between the teams and turned Gudas into one of the least popular players among many Toronto supporters.

Gudas’ hit on Sidney Crosby at the Winter Olympics also won him no admirers in Canada.

This backdrop explains why the rumor immediately exploded across social media.

TSN analyst Bryan Hayes captured the chaos with a simple post on X, writing, “Gudas to the Leafs would break the internet.”

The idea wasn’t just surprising to Toronto fans. NHL reporter Chris McCluskey responded with a message that reflected how uncomfortable some supporters are with the possibility.

“Keep. My. Team’s. Name. Out. Your. [Expletive]. Mouth,” McCluskey posted on X.

While some reactions focused on emotion, others questioned whether Gudas would even want the move. The account Jay on Leafs pointed out that the defenseman previously avoided some of hockey’s most demanding markets.

“When Gudas signed in Anaheim, he turned down deals from Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton because he didn’t want to play in markets with crushing media pressure. I can’t imagine that’s changed as he’s aged,” the account wrote.

Not everyone viewed the rumor negatively. Some simply appreciated the irony of the situation. NHL analyst Jared Book took that approach, posting on X, “Gudas going to the Leafs would be hilarious.”

Beyond the jokes and outrage, there is a hockey reason this rumor continues to gain traction.

Toronto has more than $18.5 million in projected cap space (after the Darren Raddysh trade) and could comfortably fit a contract reportedly expected to fall between $3.5 million and $4 million annually. The team also remains determined to improve a blueline that struggled physically during a disappointing campaign.

Whether a deal ever materializes remains uncertain. What is certain, however, is that few potential signings could divide the Maple Leafs fanbase quite like Gudas.
