Vancouver Canucks Successfully Bottom Out, Lead Gavin McKenna Sweepstakes With NHL-Worst Record

The Vancouver Canucks' NHL-worst record gives them the outright lead in the sweepstakes to draft top prospect Gavin McKenna.

The Vancouver Canucks are closing out a season that has not gone the way many expected, and the mood around the team feels very different now. The standings leave little room for debate, and that reality has started to shape how this stretch is being viewed.

With fewer games left, the conversation is starting to center on what this spot could lead to rather than what has already happened.

Vancouver Canucks Lead 2026 NHL Draft Race With Top Odds for Gavin McKenna

The Canucks sit at the bottom of the NHL standings with a 21-40-8 record and 50 points, putting them in the best position for the 2026 NHL Draft lottery. This situation comes after a season in which multiple areas failed to deliver, especially on defense and special teams, and after a trade that sent captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild.

NHL insider Thomas Drance summed up their situation on X, writing, “The NHL.com standings now consider the Canucks to have been officially ‘Eliminated from Playoff contention.’”

Their defensive numbers explain a large part of the outcome, as Vancouver allows 3.70 goals per game, which ranks last in the league. The penalty kill has also struggled at 71.5%, leading to more problems in key moments. Offensively, the team has not been able to respond, scoring just 2.52 goals per game and producing little from the top of the lineup.

Recent performances have followed a similar pattern, with several heavy losses that highlight the gap between Vancouver and more competitive teams.

The 3-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues on March 21 stood out, as the team recorded only 13 unblocked shot attempts at 5-on-5. That result came shortly after a 6-2 defeat against the Tampa Bay Lightning, adding to a series of games where they struggled to create chances.

While the results have been difficult, their position gives them the best odds to land the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Vancouver holds a 25.1% chance at No. 1 and a 43.7% chance to select within the top two. Even if the lottery does not go their way, they are guaranteed a top-three pick, which still offers a strong opportunity.

The main focus of this draft class is Gavin McKenna, who has been one of the top performers at the college level. The Penn State forward has recorded 51 points in 34 games and leads the Big Ten in scoring. His playmaking ability and vision have made him the leading option for teams seeking a franchise-level player.

For the Canucks, this season has put them in a position where the draft is of major importance. The results may not have gone their way, but the outcome gives them a chance to add a key piece for the future.
