The uncertainty surrounding Columbus Blue Jackets forward Kirill Marchenko continues to fuel speculation across the NHL.
Although Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell and Marchenko’s agent, Dan Milstein, have both insisted that the Russian winger will report to training camp, questions about his long-term future remain unanswered.
For Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes, that uncertainty could create an opening, as Marchenko remains one of the team’s top targets in its search for another top-six forward.
Kirill Marchenko Could Push for an Exit With Canadiens Lurking
Marchenko is coming off a breakout season where he posted 27 goals and 67 points in 76 games. His combination of size, finishing ability, and offensive instincts has made him one of the Blue Jackets’ most valuable players.
However, concerns about Columbus’ direction have continued to generate headlines. The Blue Jackets have missed the playoffs for six straight seasons, and reports suggest that Marchenko is hesitant to sign a long-term extension.
The 26-year-old is entering the final year of his contract, which carries a cap hit of $3.85 million. Next summer, he will be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights, giving him leverage if Columbus struggles again.
During a recent discussion, NHL insider Jeff Marek was asked whether Marchenko would still be a Blue Jacket a year from now.
“I think it depends on the season they have, as he could try to force his way out of there,” Marek said. “In this era, players very much can force their way out of situations, and with the help of agents can make things quite public… If it’s a good season, he stays. If not, there might be issues.”
Marek pointed to the formidable challenge facing Columbus in the Metropolitan Division, noting that off-ice turbulence and key roster questions involving star players like Zach Werenski and Adam Fantilli create an uphill battle for a franchise trying to push back into playoff contention.
If the team falls out of the playoff race again, the possibility of a trade could quickly become a reality.
Why Montreal Remains Interested
The Canadiens have made it clear that they want to strengthen their forward group after their surprising run to the Eastern Conference Final.
Adding another high-end winger would take some pressure off captain Nick Suzuki while giving Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky, and Ivan Demidov more support on the ice.
At 26 years old, Marchenko fits perfectly in Montreal’s long-term plans. His physical style, finishing ability, and powerful shot would immediately improve the Canadiens’ attack, particularly on the power play.
For now, the Blue Jackets insist that Marchenko is staying.
Still, if Columbus falls short of expectations and extension talks stall, the Canadiens will almost certainly remain among the teams monitoring the situation most closely.
