‘Hate To Say I Told You So’ — Ex-Maple Leafs Enforcer Wastes No Time Blaming Mitch Marner

The Vegas Golden Knights were within striking distance of a championship before their season came to an abrupt end against the Carolina Hurricanes. What began as a promising Stanley Cup Final soon turned into another painful postseason collapse, and as often happens when expectations go unmet, attention shifted from the team result to the performances of its biggest stars.

Mitch Marner, despite playing a major role in Vegas’ deep playoff run, once again found himself under the spotlight. Within minutes of the final horn, a familiar debate had resurfaced.

Jay Rosehill Revives Longstanding Mitch Marner Debate After Golden Knights’ Cup Loss

Marner arrived in Vegas seeking a fresh chapter, and for much of the postseason, he delivered exactly what the Golden Knights envisioned.

The star winger led all playoff scorers with 29 points and helped guide Vegas to the Stanley Cup Final. Yet for former NHL enforcer and current analyst Jay Rosehill, the story did not end with Marner’s overall numbers.

Shortly after the Hurricanes secured a 3-0 victory in Game 6 to clinch the Stanley Cup, Rosehill took to X and posted, “Hate to say I told you so but….”

The brief message carried plenty of weight, given Rosehill’s repeated criticism of Marner throughout the playoffs. To him, Vegas’ defeat and Marner’s quiet finish to the series reinforced concerns he has voiced dating back to the winger’s years in Toronto.

The criticism centered on Marner’s production during the closing stretch of the Final. After an outstanding postseason, he failed to record a point in Games 5 and 6 and finished the final three losses with a minus-5 rating. Rosehill viewed that downturn as another example of a pattern that has followed Marner throughout his career.

In reality, Rosehill’s criticism began before the series ended. Following Vegas’ 4-2 loss in Game 5, he posted another jab on X, writing, “Anyone notice Marner tonight? Was it a Game 5-7 or something?”

The comment referenced a long-running narrative that emerged during Marner’s tenure with the Maple Leafs, where critics often argued that his offensive impact diminished as playoff series reached their most critical stages.

Before his late-series slump, he was one of the driving forces behind Vegas’ postseason success. His 29 playoff points led the NHL, while his 10 goals and 19 assists helped push the Golden Knights through multiple rounds.

Marner also authored some of the postseason’s biggest moments. In Game 3 of the Final, he scored a natural hat trick in just 6 minutes and 10 seconds, establishing a modern Stanley Cup Final record. He also scored a hat trick in the Round 2 series against the Anaheim Ducks.

Earlier in the playoffs, he delivered the Game 6 winner against the Utah Mammoth, a clutch goal that many believed had finally put old playoff criticisms to rest.

Instead, Vegas’ season-ending defeat reopened the conversation.

Whether viewed as fair criticism or selective hindsight, Rosehill’s posts ensured that Marner’s playoff reputation would once again become a talking point. Even after a career-defining postseason and a trip to the Stanley Cup Final, the scrutiny that followed him in Toronto remains difficult to escape whenever a championship slips away.
