‘It’s Not Even a Threat’ — Insider Circles Back on Rumors Around Brady Tkachuk’s Trade Availability

Brady Tkachuk’s future with the Ottawa Senators remains a hot topic around the NHL. After Ottawa’s second consecutive first-round playoff exit, this time via a sweep by the Carolina Hurricanes, questions about the captain’s long-term future continue to surface, making Ottawa a noisy place this summer.

Brady Tkachuk Rumors Back in Focus

While Tkachuk has consistently dismissed speculation and expressed his commitment to Ottawa, trade rumors are unlikely to disappear anytime soon. Much of the chatter is expected to continue until he becomes eligible to sign a contract extension on July 1, 2027.

For their part, Steve Staios and the Senators’ front office have shown no indication that they are interested in moving their captain. Still, after eight seasons with limited playoff success, expectations are growing for Ottawa to take the next step and become a legitimate contender.

NHL insider Chris Johnston recently weighed in on the situation, pointing to Tkachuk’s passion for playoff hockey as a key factor. “You see him get to the playoffs,” Johnston said. “I know it didn’t go his way this year, but he fights off the opening faceoff and like, just the way he talks about the playoffs.”

Johnston recalled covering Ottawa’s playoff series against Toronto last year and witnessing firsthand how much Tkachuk embraced the atmosphere. “He loved being in that environment for the first time since he was a member of the Ottawa Senators,” Johnston explained.

The insider stressed that Tkachuk’s priority is simple: he wants to compete for a Stanley Cup. Naturally, he’d prefer to do that in Ottawa, but like every elite player, he wants to see a clear path toward championship contention.

“It’s not even a threat from him,” Johnston said. “It’s just like he wants to see and feel progress.”

That distinction is important because Tkachuk has consistently spoken positively about the Senators organization, his teammates, and the city of Ottawa. The 26-year-old has become the face of the franchise and remains deeply invested in the team’s success.

“I think Brady takes it seriously, being captain of that team,” Johnston noted. “He’s buddies with a lot of the guys. He’s kinda grown up with a number of them that have been there. He’s not holding them hostage or anything like that; I wanna make sure this doesn’t get misconstrued. But yeah, it’s a little like the [Auston] Matthews situation.”

For now, however, Johnston’s message was clear: Brady Tkachuk isn’t demanding a trade. He simply wants proof that the franchise is moving in the right direction.

As long as Ottawa continues showing progress toward becoming a Stanley Cup contender, there is every reason to believe the captain wants to be part of that journey.

That means Staios has his work cut out for him this summer, considering the Senators have a long to-do list to become a team that wins a playoff series.
