The Pittsburgh Penguins are getting a huge boost at the perfect time. Captain Sidney Crosby is set to return from injury just as the team climbs toward the top of the Metropolitan Division following a 7-2 rout of the league-leading Colorado Avalanche on Monday.
How Sidney Crosby’s Return Could Spark a Penguins Postseason Surge
Crosby had been sidelined since the Olympic break with a Grade 2 MCL sprain, sustained during Team Canada’s quarterfinal win over the Czech Republic. The injury occurred after a collision with Czech defenseman Radko Gudas, which caused Crosby’s right leg to buckle awkwardly.
The sprain forced him to miss Canada’s semifinal win over Finland and the gold medal game against the United States, which ended in a 2-1 overtime loss. Although he was reportedly close to playing in the final, the decision was made to give him extra recovery time to prevent further damage.
The Penguins later placed Crosby on injured reserve with a minimum four-week recovery window. Now, he’s back on the ice, participating fully in this morning’s practice with line rushes alongside Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell on the first line and is set to return for tonight’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes.
“Excited to get back in it,” Crosby said. “Just watching these guys and, you know, being on the trip, obviously getting closer, it’s been, you know, it’s been close, so just happy to finally be back in there.”

He is also set to slot into the top power-play unit, joining Rust, Evgeni Malkin, Erik Karlsson, and Rakell. The excitement among Penguins players was evident. Malkin was all smiles as he left the ice, telling reporters, “Guys, he’s back. Crosby back!”

While Crosby was out, Pittsburgh went 5-3-3 in 11 games, staying competitive even without their superstar. “You just see on a nightly basis the way we compete, the way we work, just coming back in games, a lot of different things,” Crosby said, reflecting on his team’s play from the press box. “So just want to jump in there and contribute as best I can.”
Crosby’s back, and the Penguins are back in business. With their captain leading the charge, Pittsburgh now has the firepower and leadership needed to climb the Eastern Conference standings.
All eyes will be on Wednesday night’s showdown with the Hurricanes, as fans hope Crosby can ignite a late-season surge and steer the Penguins deep into the playoffs.
