The NHL is entering an uncertain offseason as Alex Ovechkin weighs his future, leaving the league watching with curiosity for his next move. As the Washington Capitals closed their season, Brady Tkachuk stepped in with a fresh perspective on the situation.
Players and fans have been trying to read into every moment surrounding Ovechkin’s decision, searching for clues about what comes next. That uncertainty has now created a sense of quiet optimism, with Tkachuk pointing to a reason why he believes the story may not be over yet.
Brady Tkachuk Explains Why Alex Ovechkin May Not Be Done Yet
Tkachuk shared his thoughts on Ovechkin’s future while speaking on the Wingmen podcast, offering a personal and league-wide perspective on the situation. As Ovechkin steps away from the 2025-26 season without a clear decision, Tkachuk pointed to one small but meaningful detail that left him optimistic.
Speaking about the postgame moment on Sunday after the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals game, Brady said, “I got a glimmer of hope that since Ovi didn’t do the handshake, that we still get another chance at it.” He suggested that the absence of a traditional farewell gesture could mean more hockey ahead.
Ovechkin’s status remains unresolved after he said he would take time during the offseason to decide whether to return or retire. The Capitals captain played in what could be his final game on Tuesday, recording an assist in a 2-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Despite the uncertainty, he admitted postgame, “I hope it’s not my last game… I don’t know what’s going to happen,” leaving the door open for multiple outcomes.
Tkachuk also reflected on the broader impact Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby have had on the sport. He said, “That’d be really sad if that was the last time. They changed the NHL. Both those guys just took it from one place and left it in such a better spot, and it’s just a huge thanks to those two. I mean, those two have grown the game tremendously.”
That moment, in his view, pointed out how much respect Ovechkin has earned across the league, even in rival arenas.
Beyond the emotional side, Tkachuk made it clear that players across the NHL still want another chance to share the ice with Ovechkin.
He added, “To be able to pay our respects to a legend like that, that would mean a lot to us,” pointing to the personal connection many players feel toward his legacy. He echoed the sentiment of wanting more Ovechkin hockey, saying, “One more year. Or three more.”
Ovechkin’s decision extends well beyond Washington, as he remains one of the most influential figures in the sport after finishing the season as the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer.
Whether he signs another contract, returns to Russia, or steps away entirely, the next few months will shape how his career closes.
