The Washington Capitals closed their regular season with a 2-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, but the spotlight quickly shifted to the future of captain Alex Ovechkin. With the Capitals missing the playoffs, speculation surrounding the longtime franchise icon’s potential retirement continues to grow.
Alex Ovechkin Fuels More Questions on His Future
During the final minutes, fans filled the arena with chants urging him to return for another season, followed by a standing ovation as he left the ice. The emotional scene only intensified the uncertainty surrounding his decision.
Speaking before the game, Ovechkin admitted his health remains a factor and said his body feels pretty good but acknowledged that deciding on his future won’t be easy. “You know, it’s going to be not an easy decision. Sometimes you want it, sometimes you don’t, so we’ll think,” Ovechkin said.
When asked what he might miss most whenever he steps away, Ovechkin quickly pushed back, saying, “I didn’t step away yet, so we’ll figure it out.”
On the ice, the Blue Jackets struck first early in the second period with Boone Jenner’s goal, but Washington’s Anthony Beauvillier responded midway through the frame. Ovechkin later assisted on the go-ahead goal in the third, helping secure the 2-1 victory. Afterward, he said, “It’s pretty cool. We tried to win, and we tried to finish the season on a good note,”
With the opposing goalie pulled, his teammates repeatedly looked to set Ovechkin up for a potential last goal. He eventually had a clear chance at the empty net, but the puck bounced off him, and he couldn’t settle it in time. “I felt like I wanted him to maybe, if this is it, to ice it with one more empty-netter. He had a good look at it; the puck just was rolling,” Spencer Carbery said.
Ovechkin also said that he plans to remain in Washington for a while before returning to Russia. He said he will discuss his future with head coach Carbery, general manager Chris Patrick, and his family before making a decision.
Since debuting with the Capitals in 2005, Ovechkin has been remarkably durable, appearing in over 95 percent of the team’s games and missing only 76 contests across 21 seasons. This year marked the fifth time he played all 82 games, and he once again led Washington in goals with 32.
