The Toronto Maple Leafs have ushered in a new era with Gavin McKenna expected to become the franchise’s next cornerstone, but his arrival has unexpectedly revived an old debate from the organization’s past.
A fresh look at the structure of McKenna’s rookie contract has reignited questions about how Toronto handled previous negotiations with homegrown stars.
The discussion gathered momentum after Mitch Marner’s camp revisited long-standing frustrations over his first NHL deal, creating a sharp contrast between two generations of Maple Leafs talent.
Gavin McKenna’s Bonuses Reignite Mitch Marner Contract Debate
McKenna, the Maple Leafs’ 2026 first-overall pick, signed a three-year entry-level contract worth $3.225 million with a $1.075 million annual cap hit shortly after the draft.
Unlike Marner’s rookie deal signed in 2015, McKenna’s contract includes the maximum bonus structure permitted under the current collective bargaining agreement, including up to $2.5 million annually in Schedule B performance bonuses.
The contrast resurfaced after Marner’s longtime agent, Darren Ferris, argued that Toronto refused to offer those bonuses to Marner despite assuring his camp that future rookies would receive the same treatment.
Ferris has maintained that those early negotiations permanently damaged the relationship between Marner and the organization. He claimed Marner agreed to forgo Schedule B bonuses after being told it was club policy, only to see Auston Matthews receive a significantly richer bonus package the following year.
With McKenna now receiving the maximum bonus structure available, the difference between the two contracts has become a major point of discussion among hockey insiders and fans.
The comparison spread across social media, where several prominent voices questioned whether the issue still deserved so much attention more than a decade later.
Austin Pavao, a student journalist at Carleton University, questioned the broader narrative surrounding Marner’s treatment by the organization.
“Aside from the entry-level shenanigans, the Maple Leafs handed Marner over $100M and catered to all his needs. ‘Never protected by the organization’ is nuts. Would Mitch Marner himself even agree with that?”
Others focused less on the contract structure itself and more on the financial perspective. One fan argued that the disputed bonuses represented only a small fraction of Marner’s overall career earnings.
“Marner will make 164M by 35. The average Ontario male will make 850k-1M as an estimate in the same time. Marners bonus was approximately 2M we’ll say for argument’s sake. That’s 1.2% of earnings. For the average person, that is about 12k; he’s mad about a 12k bonus 11 years ago.”
The criticism became even stronger as more analysts weighed in. Analyst Corey Landsberg dismissed the ongoing dispute, writing:
“It’s crazy that Marner and his agent are still crying about the Schedule A vs B bonus from his ELC when he reached exactly 1 of the categories which would have paid him an additional (roughly) $150K. Just truly remarkably petty stuff from this [expletive] crybaby.”
Meanwhile, The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler shifted the focus to Marner’s overall financial success.

While McKenna’s contract represents the organization’s new approach to securing elite young talent, the side-by-side comparison has also reopened debate over whether Marner’s first NHL deal truly shaped everything that followed.
