Despite an optimistic start to the season, a nightmarish eight-game losing streak over the past month has pushed the Pittsburgh Penguins to the bottom of the standings. Even though the Penguins snagged a victory over the Chicago Blackhawks coming back from the Holiday break, much remains to be salvaged.
Sidney Crosby has maintained that the Penguins have more to offer this season despite the slump the team has fallen into. As the Penguins’ future remains uncertain, Kyle Dubas has struck a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets to acquire winger Yegor Chinakhov.
Fans React to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Yegor Chinakhov Trade
The Penguins have acquired Chinakhov from the Blue Jackets in exchange for forward Danton Heinen, a 2026 NHL draft second-round pick, and a 2027 NHL draft third-round pick. Chinakhov has been spending minimal minutes on ice this season, but has the potential to rise to the occasion.
“The Penguins have acquired forward Yegor Chinakhov from the @BlueJacketsNHL in exchange for forward Danton Heinen, a 2026 second-round draft pick, and a 2027 third-round draft pick,” posted the Penguins’ official X account, triggering a wave of reactions from social media users.
“I love it. People will complain about the picks but Chinakhov has shown the offense is there. Columbus just didn’t utilize him at all,” commented an NHL fan, expressing their faith in the 24-year-old player before stating that he remained woefully underutilized in Columbus.
Another social media user couldn’t help but share their admiration for the Penguins’ GM. “Dubas be cookin lately with trades.”
“Good trade and good value in Chinakhov. I just once again have no clue where the pens are going,” wrote a hockey fan, stating that while they believed the trade to be a move, the direction the Penguins have taken this season remains unclear to them.
Finally, another X user took a more pragmatic approach to the whole situation. While unsure about Dubas’ decision to surrender a second-round pick in the process, they believed that the Penguins would compensate by trading veteran players to acquire picks anyway.
“Don’t love giving up a 2nd rd pick from this year’s draft but I’m willing to give this a chance and if they get the highest potential out of him, then it’s a good trade. They’ll sell off vets this year for more picks and prospects, offsetting what they gave up here.”
The Penguins need all the help they can in this situation. The team needs to put in extra work if it wants to regain the form it once boasted at the start of the season. Despite Crosby’s assurance that the Penguins’ current situation is correctable, climbing up the standings could be far from easy.
