Sidney Crosby Makes Feelings Clear on Penguins Potentially Throwing In the Towel

There was a point in time this season when the Pittsburgh Penguins looked poised to turn their recent history on its head. The Penguins steadily clung to the upper rungs of the Metropolitan Division. Still, an eight-game losing streak wreaked havoc with the team’s position in the standings and with the morale of the Penguins community.

The Penguins’ latest 7-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks was a welcome change, but the injury caused by a string of losses appears insurmountable. Can the Penguins regain composure to salvage the season? Captain Sidney Crosby has spoken out.

Sidney Crosby Disagrees That This is the End for the Pittsburgh Penguins

Too many humbling defeats for a team that absolutely needs to make the playoffs is far from an ideal development. There is plenty at stake, and Crosby is privy to that. Before the commencement of the 2025-26 season, trade rumors had a grip on Crosby and other veterans, including Bryan Rust, Rickard Rakell, and Erik Karlsson. The captain had bluntly stated that for a team that has continuously failed to perform at a satisfactory level, trade noise is inevitable.

Kyle Dubas would have little interest in introducing drastic changes to the present team if it makes the playoffs. The Penguins’ current state may trigger trade noise once again, much to the players’ dismay. However, Crosby believes the Penguins are not yet doomed. The Captain, who is known for his enviable leadership skills, has found a glimmer of hope even under such adverse circumstances.

“It’s been tough, but in a bunch of those games, we were up three goals. So, the good news is, we were doing something right. Most teams would take that any day,” Crosby stated as reported by The Athletic’s Josh Yohe, trying his best to keep a positive attitude as the Penguins navigate murky waters.

Crosby realizes that despite scoring multiple goals, the bottom line remains that the Penguins lost, and it is something that the team needs to come together and rectify before it is too late.

“Obviously, we need to be better in those situations. But that’s stuff we can control. The last game, in Toronto, we did a lot of things well. But we just beat ourselves. Again, that’s correctable,” the franchise icon stated, drawing upon the team’s recent 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Crosby’s faith in his team remains firm and unshakeable, as he expressed that the Penguins’ electric form at the start of the season is an honest reflection of the team’s capabilities. Despite the odds, the Captain remains optimistic about the team’s prospects. “We still are right there. We just have to win some games. There have been a lot of games that we should have won but didn’t.”

Whether the Penguins’ victory against the Blackhawks is the start of a resurgence remains to be seen.
