The Edmonton Oilers could be staring at a rare opportunity to make a major splash this offseason. As the franchise looks for ways to strengthen a roster built to contend right now, trade chatter has begun circling around several notable defensemen who may be available. Among them is a longtime Maple Leafs blueliner whose future in Toronto suddenly appears far less secure than it did a year ago.
With new general manager John Chayka expected to reshape Toronto’s roster, one potential move is generating growing interest around the league. If it happens, it could have significant implications for both the Maple Leafs and the Oilers.
Allan Mitchell Maps Out Morgan Rielly’s Potential Fit on Oilers’ Blueline
The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly evaluating Morgan Rielly’s future with the organization after a disappointing 2025-26 season.
Rielly remains under contract through the 2029-30 season with a $7.5 million annual cap hit as part of his 8-year, $60 million deal. Recent reports from insiders Chris Johnston and Nick Kypreos suggest the veteran defenseman has become more open to the possibility of waiving his no-movement clause, creating opportunities that previously did not exist.
One of the more detailed examinations of a potential Edmonton fit came from NHL insider Allan Mitchell of The Athletic. In outlining a projected Oilers defense group, Mitchell placed Rielly on the second pairing alongside Connor Murphy, whom he projects Edmonton would re-sign in free agency.
Mitchell wrote, “The prediction here is that Stan Bowman will deal Darnell Nurse to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Morgan Rielly.”
While acknowledging the financial gap between the two contracts, Mitchell noted that Edmonton would likely need to include additional assets to make such a transaction work.
The proposal is not based solely on moving contracts. Mitchell believes Edmonton’s interest would center on Rielly’s ability to improve puck movement from the back end. He explained that “the need for a superior passer should make the deal worthwhile for Bowman,” highlighting one area where the Oilers could benefit from a different skill set.
Rielly’s offensive strengths remain attractive despite a season that drew criticism in Toronto. Mitchell pointed to the defenseman’s skating ability and puck-distribution skills as traits that could translate effectively within Edmonton’s system.
He added that “Rielly’s max foot speed is also strong despite his age (32).” According to Mitchell, these attributes would make him a logical fit beside Murphy on the second pair.

The veteran’s role would likely differ from what he was asked to do on the Maple Leafs roster. Edmonton already has Evan Bouchard entrenched as its primary power-play quarterback, limiting Rielly’s opportunities with the first unit.
Mitchell suggested the former Maple Leafs defenseman would probably work on the second power-play group while focusing primarily on five-on-five situations.
Toronto’s willingness to explore options stems from more than just on-ice performance. The Maple Leafs are looking for salary cap flexibility and a different defensive identity under Chayka’s leadership.
Moving Rielly’s contract without retaining salary would create room to pursue other roster upgrades while reshaping the blue line.

Whether Edmonton ultimately pursues such a blockbuster remains uncertain. However, Mitchell’s analysis offers a clear picture of how Rielly could slot into the Oilers’ lineup if management decides to take an aggressive swing this summer.
