Brendan Gallagher’s Path to Vancouver Canucks Gains Momentum
The possibility of Brendan Gallagher landing with the Vancouver Canucks gained momentum this week after a significant development emerged from Montreal.
The veteran winger is entering the final year of his 6-year, $39 million contract, and recent developments suggest his long tenure with the Canadiens is nearing its conclusion.
Veteran Vancouver insider Rick Dhaliwal reported on X that Gallagher’s representative has been given authorization to help find a new destination. Dhaliwal wrote, “Brendan Gallagher’s agent Gerry Johansson has permission from Montreal to help facilitate a trade.”
This update is notable because it moves the situation beyond speculation and into active exploration. Gallagher recently acknowledged that his lengthy tenure with the Canadiens is likely coming to an end, making this summer one of the biggest turning points of his NHL career.
The 34-year-old winger has spent 14 seasons in Montreal after being selected in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Draft. During that time, he became one of the franchise’s most recognizable leaders, serving as an alternate captain while compiling 246 goals and 487 points across 911 regular-season games.
However, the fit between Gallagher and Montreal’s current direction appears to have changed.
During the Canadiens’ surprising run to the Eastern Conference Final, he appeared in only three playoff games and was left out of the lineup throughout the series against Carolina. His regular-season production also dipped to seven goals and 23 points in 77 games, while his average ice time fell to a career low.
Why Vancouver Looks Like a Logical Landing Spot for Gallagher
Several factors make Vancouver an appealing destination if Montreal succeeds in finding a trade partner.
Gallagher grew up in Tsawwassen, British Columbia, and starred for the Vancouver Giants before reaching the NHL. He also indicated during his season-ending availability that Vancouver would be an attractive place to finish his career.
The Canucks also have the financial flexibility to absorb his contract. Vancouver is projected to have more than $21 million in cap space heading into the 2026-27 season, meaning Gallagher’s $6.5 million cap hit would be manageable from a purely financial standpoint, though Montreal would have to add a sweetener to ship that contract.
