‘Unless They Are Really Desperate’ — Vincent Trocheck to Maple Leafs Trade Rumor Splits Opinion Among NHL Fans

The NHL rumor mill is heating up after New York Post insider Mollie Walker reported that the Toronto Maple Leafs have contacted the New York Rangers to explore the possibility of acquiring veteran center Vincent Trocheck.

The report has quickly sparked debate among fans and analysts alike. After a disappointing 2025-26 season that ended with Toronto missing the playoffs for the first time in 10 years, the organization is searching for answers. Some believe Trocheck could be exactly what the Leafs need down the middle, while others are questioning whether the acquisition cost would be worth it.

Maple Leafs-Trocheck Rumor Creates Buzz Around the League

Toronto’s interest comes at a time when the club is dealing with a major setback. Max Domi is expected to miss significant time after suffering complications from offseason back surgery, leaving a sizable hole in the Maple Leafs’ center depth.

That puts added pressure on newly hired general manager John Chayka to strengthen the roster around franchise star Auston Matthews. On paper, Trocheck appears to be a strong fit.

The veteran center has three years remaining on a team-friendly $5.625 million cap hit. He also put up 53 points in 67 games last season and captured Olympic gold while playing alongside Matthews for Team USA.

Not surprisingly, the rumor generated plenty of reaction across the NHL.

NHL Analyst Adam Herman believes Trocheck would fit well in Toronto but questioned whether the Leafs have enough assets to get a deal done. “Trocheck makes sense for Toronto but I don’t think they have the assets to make a compelling offer. Unless they are really that desperate and will include Easton Cowan,” Herman said.

Analyst Josh Harris shared a similar view. “I’m not sure the Leafs can pull that off without including Cowan,” Harris said.

Others focused on the Rangers’ side of the equation. The BKHockeyTalk channel argued that New York should demand a significant return if it decides to move Trocheck. “If they move him, they better get a haul. The UFA market is virtually nonexistent at C. He’d be the best C available,” the channel said.

Analyst Jon Chik believes the Rangers may actually be better off waiting. “I’ve kind of felt like since they missed the boat at last year’s deadline that the right play might be to hang on to him until this year’s trade deadline. If the Rangers are competing, you can hang on to him,” Chik said.

With quality centers becoming increasingly difficult to find, Rangers general manager Chris Drury has little reason to lower his asking price. Even if the two teams eventually agree on a trade package, there is still one major hurdle: Trocheck himself.

Beginning next season, Trocheck will carry a 10-team no-trade list, but it remains unclear if Toronto is included. If the Maple Leafs are on that list, or if Trocheck simply isn’t interested in joining a Toronto team that’s trying to regroup, Chayka might have to look elsewhere for a big swing this summer.
