NHL Insider Dismisses Wild Rumor Around Sidney Crosby Vetoing Chicago Blackhawks Star’s Team Canada Inclusion

NHL insider shuts down claims that Sidney Crosby influenced Team Canada roster decision to leave a young forward off 2026 Olympics team.

Talk around Team Canada’s Olympic roster has turned into a bigger debate after their loss in the 2026 Winter Olympics final. They left out a top young player from the lineup, a former NHL first-round pick and Calder Trophy winner.

Questions followed about how decisions were made and who had influence behind the scenes. One rumor pointed toward a surprising claim involving the team captain.

Claim of Sidney Crosby Blocking Connor Bedard From Team Canada Rejected

NHL analyst Marco D’Amico addressed the claim that Crosby had a role in keeping Connor Bedard off the 2026 Olympic roster. The Chicago Blackhawks forward was not selected, prompting strong reactions from fans and the media. Some reports suggested that Crosby used his status as captain to influence the final group, but insiders quickly dismissed the idea.

D’Amico shared that roster decisions were handled strictly by Hockey Canada’s management group. He explained that players are not part of that process, even if they are team captains.

D’Amico wrote, “Sidney Crosby did not have a say in the selection of this team. The sources I’ve reached out to around Hockey Canada burst out laughing when I asked if players had any say on the selection process. The GMs involved didn’t travel for days on end to be told who to pick by their own players.” His tweet pushed back against the rumor and pointed to a standard selection system.

The decision to leave Bedard off the roster was based on experience and short-term needs. Team Canada picked players who have handled international pressure before and can adjust quickly in a short tournament.

Bedard is still one of the league’s top young talents, but the staff chose players with more experience for this event. The move was about roster balance and timing, not personal decisions from inside the room.

Crosby’s role remained focused on playing and guiding the group during the tournament. He served as captain for both the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off and the 2026 Olympics. Reports suggest his approach has been to support younger players as they enter the international stage. There is no evidence that he tried to block any player from joining the team.

The timing of the rumor also came during a difficult stretch for Crosby. He missed the Olympic gold medal game against Team USA on Sunday due to a lower-body injury.

The injury happened in the quarterfinal against Czechia and forced him out of the semifinal as well. Canada lost the final 2–1 in overtime, with Jack Hughes scoring the winner.

Crosby is now being monitored as the Pittsburgh Penguins prepare to resume play in the NHL.
