‘Greatest Country in the World’ — Matthew Tkachuk Bangs Patriotic Drum After Finally Humbling Canada

Matthew Tkachuk celebrates as USA wins 2026 Olympic gold over Canada, ending a 46-year drought in dramatic overtime encointer.

The drought is finally over, and Matthew Tkachuk made sure everyone knew it. Team USA defeated Team Canada 2-1 in overtime to capture gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics, securing the program’s third Olympic title and its first since the iconic 1980 “Miracle on Ice.”

It took extra time to separate the rivals, but when the final shot went in, the Americans had their long-awaited moment. And no one wore the emotion more openly than Matthew Tkachuk.

Matthew Tkachuk’s Passionate Message After USA Beats Canada

Moments after the win, Tkachuk delivered a passionate message, with his brother Brady by his side for interviews. “The United States of America, the greatest country in the world deserves this because we’ve been knocking at the door for a long time and we’ve got the game of hockey right now and I’m so honoured to be a part of this team,” Tkachuk said.

The U.S. hadn’t won Olympic gold in 46 years. Since the 1980 miracle run in Lake Placid, they had come close but never finished the job. This time, they did, and they did it against Canada.

Matt Boldy struck first, giving the U.S. a 1-0 lead six minutes into the opening period. He split two defenders at the blue line and finished smoothly on his backhand.

Canada answered late in the second when Cale Makar wired a snap shot into the far corner after an offensive-zone faceoff win. The tension carried into overtime.

Just 1:41 into 3-on-3 play, Zach Werenski stripped Nathan MacKinnon in the right circle and moved the puck across to Jack Hughes, who buried a wrist shot past Jordan Binnington to seal the 2-1 victory.

Connor Hellebuyck was outstanding in net, turning aside 41 shots to anchor the win. Hellebuyck and Quinn Hughes were both selected to the Milano Cortina 2026 All-Star Team, with Hughes also earning Best Defenseman honors for his outstanding all-around play throughout the tournament.

U.S. captain Auston Matthews emphasized what defined this group. “Just a resilient group, top to bottom, we’re a team,” Matthews told CBC. “It doesn’t matter who gets it done, it’s all about the team first. There’s no individual and it’s just a special group of guys, we’re all so close.

“We came so close last year in the 4 Nations, and it was even closer here and to get it done, it’s such an incredible feeling. It feels so good.”

For Matthew Tkachuk, the message was clear: the United States had been knocking on the door for decades. On Sunday night, they finally kicked it down.
