NHL free agency opens in just a few hours, and front offices around the league are preparing for a fast-moving day that could reshape several contenders. The Minnesota Wild are among the teams expected to be active as they look to strengthen a lineup with multiple openings up front.
One experienced veteran has emerged as a realistic option for Minnesota because of his fit, affordability, and proven scoring touch. As speculation builds, insiders believe GM Bill Guerin could be preparing to make one of his first big moves of the 2026 summer.
Minnesota Wild’s Free Agency Search for Scoring Depth Begins
The player drawing attention is Anders Lee, and NHL insider Elliotte Friedman believes Minnesota could be a logical landing spot.
Speaking on Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer, Friedman said, “I wonder about guys like, is Anders Lee a fit for Minnesota? They’ve got Mats Zuccarello going out. They’ve got Vladimir Tarasenko going out. Like, I wonder, are they going to take a run at a guy like Anders Lee? Is that their plan? So they want the flexibility.”
Friedman’s comments line up with Minnesota’s current roster situation. The Wild are looking to replace three top-nine wingers after Mats Zuccarello entered free agency, Vladimir Tarasenko reached the open market, and Marcus Johansson departed the NHL to continue his career in Sweden.
Rather than committing major money to a long-term contract, the organization appears to be preserving flexibility while filling multiple needs across the lineup.
That strategy could make Lee an attractive option. The Edina native has spent his entire 14-year NHL career with the New York Islanders and remains one of the league’s most reliable net-front forwards.
After completing the final season of his seven-year, $49 million contract, the 35-year-old is expected to command a much smaller salary, allowing contenders to add proven experience without making a massive financial commitment.
The interest appears genuine, but a deal may not happen immediately. Minnesota insider Michael Russo reported on X, “I expect the Minnesota Wild to have a lot of interest. I do think Lee will take his time to examine the right team for his next stop, so he may not necessarily be a July 1 signing.”
Even at this stage of his career, Lee continues to offer dependable production. He appeared in all 82 games last season, recording 19 goals and 23 assists for 42 points. Across 923 career NHL games, he has produced 308 goals and 549 points while moving within 77 games of the 1,000-game milestone.
