NHL trade rumors can circulate fast, but they become far more significant when multiple franchise players are involved at the same time. That is exactly where the Columbus Blue Jackets find themselves as uncertainty surrounding Zach Werenski and Kirill Marchenko continues to reshape the market.
With Montreal searching for another impact scorer, every new update is drawing closer attention to the Canadiens’ next move. This interest has also revealed the list of teams standing between Montreal and one of the NHL’s most productive young forwards.
Canadiens Battling Utah, Seattle, Philadelphia for Kirill Marchenko
The Montreal Canadiens are not alone in their pursuit of Columbus Blue Jackets winger Marchenko, according to NHL insider David Pagnotta. As trade discussions continue around Columbus, several teams have entered the mix for Marchenko.
Pagnotta shared the latest development on X, writing, “Trade conversations in Columbus seem focused on Zach Werenski (Dallas chats continue), but teams are still discussing Kirill Marchenko: teams like Montreal, Utah, Seattle, Philly, among others.”
It appears rival front offices are actively checking on Marchenko’s availability.
Marchenko has become an attractive target after producing back-to-back strong offensive seasons. He followed his 74-point campaign in 2024-25 with another productive year, recording 27 goals and 40 assists.
These performances have strengthened his market value as his contract situation with Columbus remains unresolved.
Reports indicate Marchenko is seeking a long-term extension worth around $11 million annually, using Pavel Dorofeyev’s recent seven-year, $77 million contract with the New York Rangers as a benchmark. However, his camp has informed Columbus that he is unlikely to commit to a long-term extension under the current circumstances, creating an opportunity for interested teams.

Blue Jackets Hold the Leverage Despite Growing League-Wide Interest
Even with multiple teams calling, Columbus is not under immediate pressure to complete a trade. Unlike Werenski, Marchenko does not control his destination through trade protection, and the Blue Jackets still hold his rights for the next season.
That gives general manager Don Waddell significant leverage during negotiations. According to reports, Columbus is demanding an overpay before considering moving one of its top offensive players, making it difficult for interested teams to strike a deal.
Montreal’s challenge is not only meeting that asking price but also outbidding several motivated competitors. Utah, Seattle, and Philadelphia are all monitoring the situation closely, and any serious offer could quickly reshape the market.
While much of the spotlight remains on Werenski’s future, Marchenko’s situation is becoming one of the more intriguing storylines around the league.

With multiple teams pursuing him and Columbus maintaining a firm negotiating stance, the Canadiens may need to move aggressively if they hope to separate themselves from an increasingly competitive field.
