‘Really Good Hire’ — Former Maple Leafs Veteran Lauds Toronto’s Decision to Hire Sidney Crosby’s Trainer

Former Maple Leafs defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo praised Toronto's decision to hire Sidney Crosby's longtime trainer.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made another significant change during an eventful offseason, adding longtime performance specialist Andy O’Brien as the organization’s new head strength and conditioning coach.

Best known as Sidney Crosby’s longtime trainer, O’Brien has built a reputation as one of the most respected figures in hockey performance and recovery. His arrival is the latest move in a summer of major changes under general manager John Chayka.

Leafs Receive Major Endorsement After Key Off-Ice Addition

O’Brien has spent years helping Crosby maintain elite production levels while navigating the physical demands of a long NHL career. He has also worked closely with several other NHL stars, including Nathan MacKinnon and Matt Duchene, further strengthening his reputation as one of the sport’s leading performance specialists.

For the Maple Leafs, the timing of the move could not be more important. Toronto is coming off an injury-plagued season in which captain Auston Matthews missed significant time with a knee injury, and the team failed to reach the playoffs.

By bringing in someone with Andy O’Brien’s experience, the organization is making it clear that keeping its star players healthy, improving recovery, and building a more durable roster are among its top priorities heading into the 2026-27 season.

The hiring immediately drew praise from former Maple Leafs defenseman and current TSN analyst Carlo Colaiacovo. “Really good hire here,” he said.

The addition of O’Brien is just one of several major changes the organization has made in recent months.

Following the dismissal of Craig Berube, the Maple Leafs hired former Los Angeles Kings coach Jim Hiller to take over behind the bench. Toronto also added Daniel Alfredsson, John Gruden, and Brad Werenka to the coaching staff.

There is another interesting connection attached to O’Brien’s arrival.

Long before either joined the Maple Leafs organization, O’Brien worked closely with Canadian hockey legend Hayley Wickenheiser as her personal trainer. Now, as Wickenheiser prepares to leave the organization after eight seasons in the front office, O’Brien is arriving to help shape the club’s next chapter.

Wickenheiser initially joined the Maple Leafs in 2018 as director of player development before being promoted to assistant general manager four years later.

Although strength and conditioning hires rarely generate the same attention as blockbuster trades or coaching changes, Toronto’s latest move could prove to be an important one.

By bringing Crosby’s trusted training expert into the organization, the Maple Leafs are investing heavily in one of the most valuable assets any contender can have: keeping their best players healthy when it matters most.
