After building one of the most dominant teams in recent NHL history and leading them to three straight Stanley Cup Finals, Florida Panthers General Manager Bill Zito was widely expected to receive long-overdue recognition.
Yet, when the NHL’s Jim Gregory GM of the Year Award went to Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill for the third consecutive season, fans and analysts were left stunned and angry. For many, the decision has reignited the ongoing debate about how success is measured in the league and whether playoff excellence is being overshadowed by regular-season stats.
Bill Zito Snubbed Again as NHL Fans Lash Out Over GM of the Year Decision
The team was far from a contender when Bill Zito took over the Florida Panthers in 2020. Years of missed playoff appearances and a revolving door of inconsistent rosters left fans skeptical. But in just five seasons, Zito didn’t just rebuild the Panthers; he turned them into a juggernaut.
Under Zito’s leadership, the Panthers have appeared in three straight Stanley Cup Finals, winning two of them. He made bold and impactful moves that reshaped the identity of the team: trading for superstar forward Matthew Tkachuk, investing in a strong supporting cast, and putting trust in the right coaching staff.
These weren’t safe or easy decisions; they were risks that paid off with championships. So when the NHL announced Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill as the winner of the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award, again, it caught many off guard.
There were 42 ballots in the NHL GM voting, and 12 of those voters did not list Bill Zito in their top three. “He got Marchand for a bag of hammers and Seth Jones for 26% off, but nah,” they said.

Outrage among fans followed almost immediately. On social media, some called the voting a “joke,” questioning the credibility of the process.
“What a joke those voters!” one fan wrote. At the same time, another stated, “Honest to God, those 12 should lose voting privileges.” Others hinted at bias, claiming the “no” votes may have come from rival fanbases in Edmonton, Toronto, and Boston, ”All those 12 “no votes “ were probably from Edmonton, Toronto , and Boston.” One fan summed up the sentiment perfectly: “So much jealousy by other teams, Zito is just going to have to get the Cats another Stanley Cup.”

Nill, who oversaw a Stars team that finished with an impressive 50-26-6 record and reached the Western Conference Final, certainly had a strong season. But for fans of the sport and especially Panthers supporters, Zito’s unmatched playoff success should have given him the edge.
