What began as a criticism of Connor McDavid quickly turned into a wave of backlash directed at Toronto broadcaster Sid Seixeiro.
The host of The Sid Seixeiro Show took issue with comments McDavid recently made about Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Gavin McKenna, but many fans argued that Seixeiro’s response only strengthened the Oilers captain’s argument.
Fans Blast Maple Leafs Host’s Criticism of Connor McDavid
During an appearance at the Zach Hyman Celebrity Classic on Monday, McDavid was asked about Gavin McKenna’s move to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Oilers captain acknowledged the pressure that comes with playing in one of hockey’s biggest markets, saying the young star would “have his hands full” in Toronto. McDavid also pointed to the support system surrounding McKenna, including captain Auston Matthews, and said he believed the teenager would be ready for the challenge.
Those comments didn’t sit well with Seixeiro. The longtime broadcaster argued that McDavid didn’t fully understand what it was like to play in Toronto and insisted that the pressure in Canada’s largest hockey market is different from what players experience in Edmonton.
“Connor McDavid doesn’t have a clue what it’s like playing hockey in the city of Toronto at that level… For the most part, if you’re like even a middle team, they’ll kind of leave you alone in terms of criticism. But when things go bad, look out. And it’s a level of criticism Edmonton has no clue about. None. So, with respect, I don’t think Connor McDavid knows what the phrase ‘He has his hands full’ in Toronto really means,” Seixeiro said.
However, many fans immediately pointed out the contradiction in his argument. By explaining how quickly the pressure rises in Toronto, Seixeiro appeared to reinforce McDavid’s original point that McKenna would face enormous expectations.
The reaction online was swift. NHL analyst Austin Hockey was among the first to point out the contradiction, writing: “Did… did you not just prove McDavid’s point?” An Oilers reporter for Daily Hive, Preston Hodgkinson, delivered a similarly blunt response: “So in essence, Gavin McKenna will have his hands full in Toronto.”
Hockey writer Raghu Sharma also weighed in, arguing that McDavid’s original remarks had been misunderstood from the start. “Literally just made McDavid’s point for him, yet Sid Seixeiro has the audacity to scoff. Connor purely meant that Toronto is a circus and it’s added to playing the sport, which anyone who has played in Toronto has proven.”
NHL analyst Ron Prochner didn’t hold back either, summing up his thoughts in just two words: “Ridiculous take.”
In the end, the debate wasn’t really about whether Toronto is a difficult market. Both McDavid and Seixeiro appeared to agree on that point.
