After months of uncertainty surrounding a franchise cornerstone, the St. Louis Blues finally drew a line in the sand. The Montreal Canadiens were frequently mentioned among the teams monitoring the situation, while several other teams reportedly explored what it would take to complete a blockbuster deal.
With the speculation finally cooling, new comments from the player have offered the clearest explanation yet for why he never wanted to leave St. Louis.
Robert Thomas Explains Why the Canadiens Trade Never Happened
Top-line centers are always in demand in this league, and Robert Thomas is no exception. However, his latest remarks have effectively closed the door on months of trade chatter.
Speaking with The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford, the Blues’ alternate captain detailed how productive offseason discussions with new general manager Alexander Steen reshaped the conversation and reinforced his commitment to the organization.
“I feel like such a big part of leadership in trying to build something special here, whether that’s now or in a couple years,” Thomas said. “That was a big part in it: ‘Do you see me as a part of that, and how quickly do you think we can build things?’ We sat down in length on a lot of details that we found really important for ourselves and the team, and a lot of them matched. I would say we both agreed on a path moving forward.”
These conversations appear to have ended any lingering uncertainty about his future.
Rather than exploring a move elsewhere, Thomas and Steen aligned on a shared vision for the franchise, making it clear that the 27-year-old center remains one of the key building blocks of St. Louis’ long-term plans.
This development comes after months of intense speculation involving several teams, including the Canadiens.
Reports suggested Montreal had explored what it would take to acquire Thomas, while previous reporting indicated the Blues were seeking an enormous return. Prospects such as Michael Hage were reportedly among the names that generated interest from St. Louis.
Thomas’ contract made moving him even more complicated. He is entering the fourth season of his eight-year, $65 million extension, which carries an $8.125 million annual cap hit and includes a full no-trade clause through the 2029-30 season.
Just as importantly, Thomas confirmed the organization never approached him about waiving that protection because neither side viewed a trade as the preferred outcome.
After recording 64 points in 64 games during the 2025-26 season, Thomas remains firmly positioned as the centerpiece of that next chapter.
