The Toronto Maple Leafs are in the middle of a busy season, balancing strong scoring with inconsistent defense. Auston Matthews and William Nylander continue to lead the offense, but close games show the need for strengthening the roster. Injuries have affected their lineup, and call-ups from the AHL have kept the roster moving.
As the team looks toward the playoffs, trade talks have started to draw attention.
Toronto Maple Leafs Target St Louis Captain Brayden Schenn in Trade Talks
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman shared on 32 Thoughts that the St. Louis Blues have set a clear price for their captain, Brayden Schenn. Friedman said, “The Blues told the Maple Leafs, if you want Brayden Schenn, it was gonna be Easton Cowan, Ben Danford, and something else; that was on the table.” This makes it clear that Toronto would need to give a mix of young talent and prospects to complete a deal.
Brayden Schenn, 34, remains an important center for St. Louis. Drafted fifth overall by the Los Angeles Kings in 2009, he takes key faceoffs for the Blues, supporting teammates, and protects the puck. Through 47 games this season, he has nine goals, adding to his 19 points this season. While his minus rating reflects team struggles, Schenn’s effort and presence on the ice continue to help the Blues.
Toronto’s roster moves this season show their focus on balancing player health, development, and depth. Players like Marshall Rifai, Dakota Mermis, and Henry Thrun have moved between the NHL and AHL. William Nylander recently returned from injury, but players like Chris Tanev and Dakota Joshua are still on injured reserve, along with Dakota Mermis and goaltender Anthony Stolarz. So, Toronto is carefully managing its lineup amid challenges to stay competitive.

Adding Schenn would give the Maple Leafs a veteran center who can anchor lines, protect younger players, and provide steady play in tight games. Easton Cowan and Ben Danford are young prospects who could interest St. Louis as part of the trade. As Toronto weighs its options, acquiring an experienced player like Schenn could help improve its depth and stability, while St. Louis could gain pieces for the future.
The Maple Leafs will face the Vegas Golden Knights on Jan. 15, and the next day Blues will host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Whether Schenn stays or moves, his experience will be assessed by both teams as they push toward the playoffs.
