‘That Should Be a Non-Starter’ — Oilers Urged To Demand $12,300,000 Winger In Potential Darnell Nurse Trade

Oilers urged to demand a top Kings winger in a possible Darnell Nurse trade as Edmonton weighs cap space and roster reset.

The Edmonton Oilers are under heavy pressure on both the ice and in the front office after an unexpected early postseason exit, and the mood around the team feels impatient.

Darnell Nurse sits at the center of the storm with his trade request, and from an outside view, it feels like a relationship both sides are ready to move on from. Roster change no longer looks like a debate in Edmonton; it looks like the next step in a reset that has already started to take shape.

With Nurse looking to move on, the Los Angeles Kings have been linked with a potential move, but chatter across the league is raising questions over what the return might look like.

Oilers Told to Target $12.3M Kings Winger in High-Stakes Darnell Nurse Trade Talk

Nurse’s trade request has opened the door to one of the more aggressive conversations of the offseason, and some around the league believe Edmonton should not settle for a modest return.

Edmonton Journal reporter Jim Matheson has pushed a bold idea involving the Los Angeles Kings. He suggests the Oilers should only consider moving Nurse if they land young winger Alex Laferriere in the deal.

On X, he wrote, “Clearly, Ken Holland will be hottest to trot to get Nurse for his weak back-end but unless Oilers get forward Alex Laferrière back, that should be a non-starter for EDM. If trading Nurse, strong way forward for Oilers is to sign Kulak as left D.”

The connection between the two teams is easy to follow. Kings GM Ken Holland was the same executive who originally signed Nurse to his 8-year, $74 million contract during his time in Edmonton.

That history makes Los Angeles a natural landing spot, especially as the Kings look to strengthen their defensive group with size and experience.

But the real debate starts with Laferriere’s name entering the conversation. The 24-year-old winger has grown into a steady middle-six forward for the Kings, producing back-to-back strong seasons while playing on a cost-controlled contract worth $12.3 million over three years.

His $4.1 million cap hit runs through the 2027-28 season, giving Los Angeles strong value in a tight salary-cap world.

That is exactly why the idea feels ambitious. Players with that mix of age, production, and contract control are rarely moved unless the return is overwhelming. At the same time, Nurse carries a $9.25 million cap hit and is coming off a season that raised questions about consistency and impact.

Edmonton’s motivation is clear.

The team wants flexibility around its core and a cleaner salary structure moving forward. Nurse’s production dipped to a career-low 24 points in 2025-26, adding more weight to the push for change on the blueline.

Matheson also suggested the Oilers sign Brett Kulak, whom they traded before the deadline and who is currently with the Colorado Avalanche. He will become a UFA on July 1, and the Oilers will have the opportunity to sign him then. He could step into a larger role if Nurse is moved, and the option would allow Edmonton to stabilize the left side without committing major cap space.

The Kings, however, must decide whether giving up a young, rising winger is worth taking on a heavy contract in return. That tension is what makes this trade idea more theory than certainty… for now.
