For the first time in years, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ season has fallen this low, with such a long losing skid in March. It feels increasingly uneasy, and the latest disappointing home result seemed to deepen the concern inside the arena. The crowd’s reaction suggested that fans’ patience is starting to fade.
The same concern was evident afterward when the head coach addressed the situation.
Craig Berube Responds as Maple Leafs Hear Boos After 5–2 Loss to Lightning
The Maple Leafs suffered a 5–2 defeat against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday at Scotiabank Arena. The result pushed Toronto’s losing streak to seven games and marked the team’s eighth straight home loss.
Toronto started well and scored early in the first period. Matias Maccelli scored after receiving a pass from William Nylander. The early goal briefly energized the home crowd, but the game quickly turned.
Tampa Bay answered with four goals in the same period and took control before the first intermission. The Leafs struggled to slow the attack as the Lightning created chances through quick puck movement in the offensive zone.
Nikita Kucherov had a strong night and recorded four assists. The performance helped him reach the 100-point mark for the sixth time in his NHL career, and fourth consecutive.

Ryan McDonagh, Jake Guentzel, Corey Perry, Oliver Bjorkstrand, and Brandon Hagel scored for the Lightning, while goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy made 27 saves to secure the win.
Toronto found the net again late when Nick Robertson scored, but the result had already been decided. Many fans began leaving their seats during the third period as the game slipped away.
The remaining crowd let out loud boos once the final horn sounded. Toronto has now gone several weeks without a win since the Olympic break, and the fans’ reaction showed their displeasure with the recent results.
Head coach Craig Berube addressed the response after the game. Speaking to reporter Jesse Blake, Berube said, “They paid good money to come watch us and they want wins, just like we do. That’s a part of the game.”

Toronto’s recent losses include games against the New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, and Philadelphia Flyers. Some of those contests were close, including two shootout defeats despite strong work from goaltender Anthony Stolarz.
With 18 games remaining, Toronto must find answers quickly if it wants to stay in the playoff race. The team will look to achieve better results in its next game against the Montreal Canadiens.
