For a team that has been struggling as much as the Toronto Maple Leafs, the trade deadline should have fared differently. But a rather uneventful turn of events has only exacerbated discontent, and for the custodian of the front office, Brad Treliving, it is hardly good news. Many fans in Toronto would like to see the GM bid the Leafs farewell. Unfortunately, management has failed to identify a suitable successor, which has fueled further social media discourse and criticism.
Social Media Criticises Brad Treliving After Maple Leafs’ Disappointing Trade Deadline
One damning loss after another has pushed the Maple Leafs near the very bottom of the Atlantic Division standings. The Leafs’ current state is in stark contrast to the glory of the 2024-25 season, when Craig Berube led the team to finish at the top with 108 points. Entering the 2025-26 season, the Leafs were supposed to pick up where they left off and advance deeper into the postseason. However, the reality could not be farther from that.
Not only has the season been poor, but the team’s approach to the deadline was thoroughly underwhelming. Treliving is not one to escape accountability; he is ready to shoulder a part of the blame for the Leafs’ season from hell. “Craig’s a terrific coach. It hasn’t worked, right? So, when it doesn’t work, we all share a blame, and we all share responsibility. So, starts with myself. It’s the coaches. It’s the players,” Treliving stated, as reported by Sportsnet’s Luke Fox.
Despite his willingness to shoulder responsibility, no slack will be cut, and Treliving’s tenure with the Leafs might just be hanging by a thread. However, the management’s questionable handling of the matter has drawn the ire of commentators and insiders.
“The level of franchise ineptitude on display here is so pathetic. go through an interview process, find someone better, i promise it won’t be hard!” Dom Luszczyszyn shared on X, appealing to the Leafs management to take a more proactive approach to finding a new GM who can deftly lead the Leafs.
Sportsnet’s Mark Spector also reminded that, given the Leafs are the NHL’s most expensive franchise with adequate resources at their disposal, there is little excuse for them to falter at such a grand scale. “Two series won in 20 years – with more resources than any other NHL franchise. There is a thesis paper to be done here. PHD, majoring in ineptitude.”
Mike Stephens aggressively urged the Maple Leafs management to find a way to move past Treliving and identify a more able GM. Stephens also made a point of highlighting Treliving’s deficiencies and arguing for Toronto to finally seek a solution to this pesky issue.
“They didn’t even fucking interview anyone when they hired him in the first place!!!!! talk to some people and you might find someone more competent than the abject moron who just plunged your franchise into the dark ages within the past calendar year!!!! holy shit dude.”
TSN’s Travis Yost also suggested that the Leafs should go far and wide in their hunt for a better GM, and in time, they will stumble upon a suitable candidate. “You’ve gotta scour the globe. There are no fewer than six retread candidates who can fit right in.”
The Maple Leafs are not only burdened by a seven-game losing streak during a critical stretch of the season that has fatally butchered playoff hopes, but also the management is at the receiving end of unrelenting backlash for their handling of issues off the ice. Clearly, the Leafs’ brass has a lot of work to do to regain the community’s trust.
