An OHL matchup between the Brampton Steelheads and Oshawa Generals on Friday night took a dark turn when emotions boiled over after a check. The incident has been hailed as one of the dirtiest of all time, and will result in a lengthy suspension. Hockey fans were quick to take to social media to react.
What Happened Between Luke Dragusica and Brady Blaseg?
After being hit, Steelheads defender Luke Dragusica retaliated by delivering a stick swing to the head of Generals blueliner Brady Blaseg, sending Blaseg down and bloodied for a lengthy stretch.
One of the dirtiest plays in a long time in the OHL last night. Luke Dragusica slashes Brady Blaseg across the face, leaving him gushing blood on the ice.

As Blaseg remained on the ice, Dragusica delivered a second cross-check before officials intervened. The play immediately erupted as Oshawa’s skaters rushed Dragusica, setting off a fight. Dragusica was later suspended indefinitely by the league on Saturday as officials opened a review.
“Brampton’s Luke Dragusica has been suspended pending review as a result of actions (Match, Slashing) on Nov. 14th vs. Oshawa,” the OHL tweeted.

“One of the dirtiest plays in a long time in the OHL last night. Luke Dragusica slashes Brady Blaseg across the face, leaving him gushing blood on the ice. The kind of thing that merits a season-long suspension, or more,” tweeted Scott Wheeler, a national reporter for The Athletic.
“He should never get to put a jersey on again. Need a permanent ban from the game,” responded one fan.
“This is the season minimum. Such a stupid act. Hate to see his career halted permanently for an instance of stupidity. But the starting point for a ‘sussie’ has to be the remainder of the season/playoffs,” added another.

“Brutal. No place in the game for that,” said another fan. “If this player laces up skates in the OHL again this season, you have failed Canadian Jr hockey. Utterly intentional slash to the head, and then follows it up with a cross-check to a prone player. Ban Luke Dragusica,” said another.
Disciplinary action in the OHL for violent incidents has tended to be severe; eight games last season for a dangerous slash, and six games for a blindside check just last month. The incident revives memories of the league’s longest-ever ban, when Erie’s Michael Liambas was suspended 68 games in 2009-10 after a check that fractured an opponent’s skull.
Given the severity of Blaseg’s injury and the reckless nature of the stick swing, Dragusica is likely facing a significant suspension once the OHL completes its investigation.
