The spotlight around the Edmonton Oilers has grown a little brighter than expected, and it all stems from recent comments made by Connor McDavid.
What initially sounded like a routine postgame remark has quickly turned into a talking point across the NHL. However, according to one insider, the reaction may be overblown.
Chris Johnston Clarifies McDavid’s Comments on Oilers Coaching
The Edmonton Oilers are coming off back-to-back losses and have slipped to second in the Pacific Division, adding pressure during a key stretch. After Saturday’s 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, McDavid praised Tampa Bay’s structure.
“They’ve got a great system,” and “They’re perfectly coached,” McDavid said. When asked what it would take for Edmonton to reach that level, McDavid pointed toward coaching, saying, “That’s a coaching question. You can ask Knoblauch that question.”

That response quickly went viral, with many interpreting it as a subtle critique of head coach Kris Knoblauch and his staff. But NHL insider Chris Johnston sees it differently.
Johnston believes McDavid’s words were more about frustration with recent results than any attempt to shift blame. In his view, this isn’t about a star player targeting his coach; it’s about a team that knows it hasn’t been at its best.
“To me is not a guy trying to get his coach fired or anything like that, but I’ve obviously seen a lot of people jump into that conclusion and you know I can see why you would, but I think you have to you can’t remove a couple quotes from generally everything going on around the Oilers right now,” Johnston said.
He also pointed to similar comments made earlier in the season by Leon Draisaitl, who openly questioned execution and systems during a difficult stretch before the Olympics.
While McDavid’s comments sparked debate, there’s no concrete indication of deeper issues between players and the coaching staff. Still, when a player of his stature speaks, every word tends to carry extra weight.
That’s why Johnston believes it’s important to look at the bigger picture instead of isolating a single quote. “I’m sure Conor McDavid’s going to be asked about this earlier this week. He’s going to probably have to clarify in some way, shape, or form what he meant,” Johnston added.
Despite the recent slide, Edmonton remains in a solid position in the Western Conference playoff race, though its current total would place the team in a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

For now, the focus shifts back to the ice, with the Oilers set to face the Utah Hockey Club on Tuesday as they look to get back on track.
