The Edmonton Oilers are searching for answers at a critical point in the season, and recent comments from Connor McDavid have only added fuel to the conversation.
After back-to-back losses, including a 5-2 defeat to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday, the Oilers have slipped to third in the Pacific Division. With the playoff race tightening, questions about structure, consistency, and coaching are increasingly being raised.
Oilers Challenged to Be Transparent Amid Recent Slump
Following Saturday’s loss, McDavid didn’t hold back in praising the system of the Tampa Bay Lightning. He pointed to their structure and discipline as a benchmark, noting how “perfectly coached” and organized they looked on the ice.
When asked what it would take for Edmonton to reach that level, McDavid said, “That’s a coaching question. You can ask Knoblauch that question.”
It may not have been a direct critique, but it certainly raised eyebrows and quickly caught the hockey world’s attention. This isn’t the first time questions have emerged from within the locker room.
Before the Olympics, Leon Draisaitl voiced frustration during a rough stretch, hinting at concerns around execution and systems. Draisaitl is currently on long-term injured reserve.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman weighed in on the situation, offering a straightforward solution: address everything internally and head-on.
Friedman suggested the Oilers hold a full team meeting, bringing together players, coaches, and even management. “You have all the players, you have the coaches, you can even have the executives, and you say guys we’re all out here, you got a problem get it out, everybody face to face get it out. And after this meeting, this is it, no more public stuffs, no more this,” Friedman said.
“We got to make the playoffs and have games to win, and its not helping, with what we are saying, we’re hearing it out all here, and then, we’re pulling together,” he added.
In his view, keeping those conversations behind closed doors could stop things from becoming public distractions at a critical point in the season.
There is no clear sign of deeper issues within the Oilers, but the situation has still raised eyebrows. When top players openly discuss structure and coaching, it is bound to attract attention.
Even so, Edmonton is still in a solid spot in the standings. Despite the recent slide, the team remains very much in the playoff hunt.
The challenge now is finding consistency quickly. For the Oilers, attention now turns to their next game against Utah on Tuesday.
