The Columbus Blue Jackets have made progress on several important offseason decisions, but one major piece of business remains unfinished as training camp continues to draw closer. Adam Fantilli, one of the team’s most important young players, is still without a new contract despite becoming eligible for an extension upon expiration of his entry-level deal.
The delay has prompted broader questions about the Blue Jackets’ long-term plans rather than Fantilli’s commitment to the organization.
Pierre McGuire Questions Delay in Adam Fantilli’s Blue Jackets Extension
Former NHL executive Pierre McGuire raised that exact concern during a recent episode of The Sick Podcast: The Eye Test, where the conversation initially centered on the overall health of the Blue Jackets organization.
While the host expressed concern about the franchise’s future and praised Columbus as an underrated hockey market with loyal fans, McGuire turned the discussion toward the team’s biggest pending decision.
“I think it’s a tremendous city. I think it’s a very good place to have hockey,” McGuire said before highlighting the team’s geographic advantages.
He pointed to natural rivalries with Detroit, Pittsburgh, Nashville, and Chicago, adding that rivalry games remain an important part of growing the sport. He also stressed that hockey has its own place within the city despite the enormous popularity of Ohio State football. “The Columbus Blue Jackets belong to Columbus. They belong to the people of Columbus,” he said.
He then delivered the question that has become the focus of the discussion: “I’m concerned about one thing… Why isn’t Fantilli signed? The market has been established.”
His comments came after the NHL’s restricted free-agent market changed dramatically this summer. New contracts for fellow 2023 draft players Leo Carlsson ($18M AAV) and Connor Bedard ($15M AAV) also significantly increased expectations for elite young centers, forcing teams and agents across the league to reassess negotiations.
What Is Delaying Fantilli’s New Deal With Columbus?
Fantilli is currently a restricted free agent after completing his three-year, $950,000 entry-level contract with Columbus. Negotiations remain active after his recent vacation in Italy, but the financial landscape has changed considerably since talks first began.
The Blue Jackets also had other priorities earlier in the summer, resolving arbitration-related contracts for Jet Greaves and Cole Sillinger before shifting full attention to Fantilli.
Because Fantilli does not have arbitration rights, there was less urgency from a procedural standpoint.
Columbus still has enough cap space to complete the deal, but a contract at the projected value would consume nearly all of the team’s remaining flexibility. This financial reality has also generated speculation about future roster decisions involving other young forwards.
