The pressure surrounding Auston Matthews in Toronto appears to be reaching a boiling point. With the Toronto Maple Leafs stuck in an eight-game losing streak and Matthews dealing with a prolonged scoring drought, criticism has intensified across the city.
Amid the criticism, Team USA general manager Bill Guerin has stepped in to defend the star forward and address the way Matthews has been treated in Toronto.
Team USA General Manager Bill Guerin Defends Auston Matthews
One of the striking aspects of the situation is the contrast in how Matthews is viewed on different sides of the border. In the United States, he is widely celebrated as a national hero, while in Canada, he has recently become a frequent target of criticism.
Much of the attention intensified following the 2026 Winter Olympics. Matthews captained Team USA to a historic gold-medal victory over Canada, further cementing his legacy as one of the biggest American stars in the sport. However, after returning to Toronto, the tone quickly changed.
The criticism ramped up when Matthews visited the White House with Team USA to celebrate the Olympic victory before returning to play a game in Tampa. At the same time, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube has publicly called for more from his team, saying the group needs to “provide more” and bring additional “grease” to their game.
Under Berube’s defensive system, Matthews is on pace for fewer than 40 goals and is stuck in a 12-game drought, fueling trade speculation.
Guerin, however, believes much of the criticism misunderstands Matthews’ leadership style. “I’ve gotten to know Auston over the last couple of years… leading up to the Four Nations and then through the Olympics,” Guerin said.
“I know he deals with a lot there in Toronto, but I think the world of him.”

He added, “I think the world of him. There are different types of leadership. A lot of people expect the captain to be this, rah, rah guy, stand up in the locker room and give a big speech.”
According to Guerin, that expectation doesn’t always reflect reality. “Most of the captains that I played with…. were not those types of guys… Guys like that, they do their leading on the ice. And I think that’s what Auston is.”
Guerin also praised Matthews’ overall game, particularly the defensive side that often goes unnoticed. “I think it’s completely underrated. You know, how dedicated he is to his own end and his stick and stripping pucks. I don’t know. He’s a hell of a player, man. I know he deals with a lot there in Toronto, but I think the world of him,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs continue searching for answers. The Maple Leafs hosted the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday in an attempt to snap their losing streak.
