The Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini controversy took another unexpected turn this week. While much of the national conversation has centered on criticism and scrutiny, the response from New England Patriots fans painted a very different picture.
At a Patriots season-ticket holder event, the head coach was greeted with loud applause that became a standing ovation. The moment quickly made its way across social media, sparking a wave of strong reactions.
Mike Vrabel Gets Standing Ovation From Patriots Amid Dianna Russini Scandal
The clip, shared by Barstool Sports, captured the moment Vrabel walked into a Q&A session with fans and received a warm reception.
“Mike Vrabel received a standing ovation at the Patriots season ticket holder event,” Barstool Sports captioned it, setting off immediate reactions online.

Dave Portnoy, a prominent Patriots supporter, defended the fans’ reaction and explained their thinking.
“Patriots fans aren’t into gossip and tabloid fodder. We are into winning super bowls and forgiveness. Model franchise,” he wrote.
Another Barstool personality, Jack Mac, joined the conversation by posting a meme of legendary coach Jim Boeheim.

Jerry Thornton, also of Barstool Sports, doubled down on Portnoy’s argument, suggesting that the fanbase is largely unfazed by outside criticism.
“We’ve perfected the art of not giving a f*** what the rest of the world thinks.” Thorton wrote.
However, the majority of reactions were critical of the New England fans. NFL analyst Thomas R. Petersen offered a tongue-in-cheek response: “It’s Patriots fans. Cheering on cheaters is all they ever do.”

Avery Zaretsky echoed that sentiment with a harsh take on the fans, “Pats fans applauding cheaters. Nothing new here.”
Podcaster Shawn DePaz added another critical perspective.
“Nothing ingratiates Boston sports figures to Boston sports fans like doing an objectively bad thing,” DePaz added.
“This offseason Mike Vrabel has been an embarrassment to himself and his family while being a distraction to the New England Patriots organization. I don’t get burning him at the stake, but I don’t get a standing ovation either,” NFL analyst Dan Kelley wrote on X.

Kirsten Fleming of the New York Post also weighed in, “In case anyone was wondering where Pats season ticket holders stand…” she noted.
As Pro Football Talk noted, the applause may have been encouraged by the host of the event (which wouldn’t be a huge surprise given how New England has botched this from a PR standpoint).
Still, the overall reception indicates that Vrabel has not lost the support of a core segment of the Patriots fanbase.
That backing could prove important as the situation continues to unfold. The controversy has already impacted team operations, including Vrabel missing Day 3 of the NFL Draft.
