Things have gone from bad to worse for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. On a chilly night at home in Raymond James Stadium, the Bucs and their fans witnessed the club drop a crucial showdown with their NFC South Division rivals.
After a back-and-forth affair, the Atlanta Falcons ended up playing spoiler, hitting a walk-off field goal in the waning seconds of the match. While all hope is not lost, things are looking a bit more bleak for the Buccaneers.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Lose Their Grip on the NFC South
It was an entertaining game despite the loss; however, it could dramatically reshape the NFL postseason picture. The Buccaneers had control of the matchup early in the 4th quarter, scoring a touchdown to extend their lead to 28-14. Unfortunately for Tampa, it was all downhill from there.
Thanks to elite performances by Kyle Pitts Sr. and Bijan Robinson, the Falcons were able to close the gap before hitting a massive field goal to close it out and complete their 15-point comeback to secure a 29-28 victory. There was no one player to blame for the Buccaneers’ collapse, as the entire roster failed to deliver. From the inability to kill the clock to costly defense penalties and a struggling offensive line, it seemed that everything fell apart at the worst time for Tampa.
The Buccaneers have been in an extended rut, which has dramatically changed their outlook this year. The struggling squad has dropped five of its last six games, which has opened the door for the Carolina Panthers to take sole possession of the division.
Coming into their Week 15 matchup against the Falcons, the Bucs held a slight lead on the Panthers for first place in the NFC South. Now, if the Panthers can pull off a victory this weekend against the New Orleans Saints, they can surpass the Bucs with only three games remaining.
Even if the Panthers do take over first place, the drama will only continue to mount as Tampa Bay and Carolina will play each other twice before the end of the regular season. If the Bucs are going to secure their 5th consecutive NFC South division title, the club is going to have to step up and shut down Bryce Young and the Panthers.
The Buccaneers’ next opportunity to correct their mistakes will come on December 21 when they make their way up to Charlotte for their first battle with the Panthers. According to PFSN’s Defense Impact rankings, the Panthers sit 27th in the NFL, something that the Bucs will try to take advantage of as they look to right the ship and secure a postseason berth.
