The 27-19 defeat to the Ravens on Sunday was a statistical gut punch for the Vikings, representing more than just a missed opportunity. Minnesota may have tanked its postseason chances.
The Vikings’ playoff probability cratered nearly 20 percentage points after the defeat, its most significant one-week drop of the season. What looked like momentum a week ago in Detroit has now turned into a race against time and math with seven games left.
Minnesota Vikings Playoff Chances Plummet After Costly Loss to Baltimore Ravens in NFC North Race
The Vikings face an uphill battle to reach the playoffs, according to PFSN’s NFL Football Playoff Meter. Minnesota now has only a 20.9 percent chance of making the postseason. Their odds of winning the NFC North have dropped to 5.5 percent, down more than 11 points since last week.
The Vikings’ Super Bowl and top-seed hopes are virtually erased at 0.1 percent each. For comparison, Detroit sits at around 40 percent to win the division, following its blowout win over the Commanders. Chicago, after a comeback win against the Giants, rose to 51 percent playoff odds, highlighting just how tight the mid-tier NFC race has become.
Sunday’s loss exposed why the numbers moved so sharply. Minnesota committed 13 penalties for 102 yards, the most by any team at home this season. Five false starts on first down repeatedly buried drives, and rookie returner Myles Price fumbled two kickoffs, one of which set up Baltimore’s first touchdown.
Quarterback J.J. McCarthy threw two interceptions and completed just 20 of 42 passes, often looking out of touch with Justin Jefferson, who caught only four of 12 targets for 37 yards. The second-year quarterback, making his fourth-career start, ranked 36th in PFSN’s QBi entering Sunday. He’ll likely remain near the bottom of that metric after another inconsistent outing.

Even so, the Vikings had a chance late. McCarthy hit receiver Jalen Nailor for a fourth-down touchdown in the final minutes to pull within one score before another stalled drive ended the comeback. Nailor’s impressive five catches for 124 yards were a bright spot in an otherwise error-ridden day, though the team’s mistakes ultimately overshadowed his performance.

Now at 4-5, Minnesota trails all three division rivals and faces a defining two-game stretch against the Bears and Packers. Wins in both could pull the Vikings back near playoff relevance. Another slip could close the door before December.
