The Minnesota Vikings released their updated injury report Thursday, and the team appears to be inching closer to full strength as it prepares for Sunday’s road matchup with the Detroit Lions.
Quarterback J.J. McCarthy continues to make progress toward his first start since Week 2, while several defensive starters are trending in the right direction. The offensive line, however, remains a concern after left tackle Christian Darrisaw was held out of practice with knee soreness.
Minnesota Vikings Getting Healthy At Right Time
McCarthy was a full participant for the second consecutive day and confirmed earlier this week that his ankle feels “amazing.” He said he “finally feels like himself again” after missing several weeks with a high ankle sprain suffered in mid-September. The Vikings have lacked offensive consistency in his absence, cycling through multiple quarterbacks and losing four of their last six games. With McCarthy back, the focus shifts to keeping him upright behind a line that has struggled to stay healthy.
Right tackle Brian O’Neill remained limited but continues to trend upward. Darrisaw’s setback, though, raises new questions about whether Minnesota’s front five can stay intact against a Detroit defense that is sixth-best in PFSN’s Defense Impact rankings. Tight end Josh Oliver (foot), fullback C.J. Ham (hand), and cornerback Jeff Okudah (concussion) were all held out again and are unlikely to be available.

Defensively, the Vikings are getting timely reinforcements. Edge rushers Jonathan Greenard (ankle) and Andrew Van Ginkel (neck) both practiced fully, positioning the defense to field its most complete pass-rushing duo in weeks. Their presence will be crucial against Jared Goff, who has posted one of the league’s best passer ratings when kept clean. Cornerback Isaiah Rodgers (shoulder) was again limited but should be ready to go Sunday, giving Minnesota additional flexibility in the secondary if Okudah remains sidelined.
At 3-4, the Vikings enter Week 9 with a chance to even their record and reset their season against the 5-2 Lions. Health has been one of the team’s biggest obstacles through the first half of the year. Still, with McCarthy and several key defenders trending upward, Minnesota has an opportunity to stabilize and make a push toward the playoff picture.
