The Minnesota Vikings are finally turning back to J.J. McCarthy, who declared himself fully healthy and “ready to go” after missing six weeks with a high right ankle sprain. The second-year quarterback took every first-team rep in Wednesday’s practice and will start Sunday against the Detroit Lions, marking his first game action since mid-September.
J.J. McCarthy Resets Mentally and Physically After Six Weeks Away
McCarthy said his ankle now feels “amazing” and that he has regained the mobility that limited him during previous workouts. He admitted the recovery process tested his patience, especially after the swelling from Minnesota’s overseas trip delayed his return. Still, he said the time off allowed him to step back and reset.
“The biggest thing I took away was just how when we do the simple things right, what does the outcome look like?” McCarthy said. “It really just came down to my processes, the reads, the footwork, staying calm and confident every play.”
He spent the past few weeks reviewing film with head coach Kevin O’Connell, focusing on improving his footwork and simplifying his reads. At the time of his injury, McCarthy ranked second-to-last in PFSN’s QBi, but coaches believe he can make strides with improved fundamentals. O’Connell said the goal is not perfection but consistency and command.
“It just needs to be clear and obvious that he’s got a good grasp on doing his job, O’Connell said, technique, fundamentals, progressions.”
McCarthy has missed 23 of his first 25 NFL games, including the playoffs, but said he is trying to view the setback as part of his development.
“It’s been a roller coaster,” he said. “You don’t know now, but you’ll know later. God always has a plan for every single one of us.”
Vikings’ Offense Shifts to Fit McCarthy’s Strengths
With veteran quarterback Carson Wentz sidelined for the year, offensive coordinator Wes Phillips said the staff has tailored this week’s game plan around McCarthy’s comfort zones. The approach will lean on his timing and mobility, two elements that were missing earlier in the season.

“We have a sample size from the offseason and training camp, things we know he feels good about,” Phillips said. “But the best way you can help a quarterback is to scheme a play where number one is open.”
Phillips described McCarthy’s attitude as “attacking” and said the locker room is eager for a response.
“Guys are going to come out ready to play football,” he said. “We’re ready to go execute play in and play out, and the big plays will come.”
McCarthy’s return arrives at a pivotal moment for a 3-4 Vikings team still searching for offensive rhythm. Whether his reset leads to results will depend on how quickly he can turn that renewed confidence into production.
