J.J. McCarthy’s voice cracked before he even finished his sentence. Minutes after leading the Vikings to a 27-24 upset win over the Lions, the young quarterback opened up about what the victory meant to him and the teammates who helped him get there. It wasn’t solely about returning from injury or quieting a hostile Detroit crowd. For McCarthy, it was about being back on the field alongside players he said he loves like family.

McCarthy held back tears when reflecting on the support he received from teammates after the game.
“When you’re hurt, being on IR last year and being out for five weeks, it absolutely kills me not being out there with those guys,” he said. “I love every single one of them. I know they got my back, and I got theirs the rest of the way.”

The second-year quarterback credited every part of the team for contributing to the win. “We really played well on all three phases,” he said. “There’s still a lot of meat on the bone, but I’m proud of our guys. We just need to correct the little things and keep improving.”
McCarthy said his mindset late in the game was to take it one play at a time. The Vikings needed that composed approach, especially with an offense ranked 24th in PFSN’s OFFi entering Sunday.
“I think clutch is a myth,” he said. “It’s just about executing that individual play regardless of the circumstances. Those things are outside of our control.”
Before kickoff, McCarthy addressed his teammates as one of the captains, delivering a message about seizing the moment. “I told the guys this was something we’ve been praying for since we started wearing pads,” he said. “This opportunity is on a silver platter. Put everything into this moment.”
He also reflected on what it meant to return to the state where he built his football foundation at Michigan. “I’ve shed a lot of blood and tears in this state,” McCarthy said. “It’s special to come back here, see familiar faces, and show how far I’ve come.”
McCarthy acknowledged there’s still plenty to improve on, but his leadership and emotion set the tone for the Vikings’ locker room. “There’s a lot I need to clean up,” he said. “But I’m happy the boys had my back today, and I’m extremely grateful.”
