Vikings Injury Report: Latest Updates on J.J. McCarthy, Christian Darrisaw, and Andrew Van Ginkel

The Vikings are finally getting healthy, with several key players all returning to full practice ahead of a pivotal divisional matchup.

The Minnesota Vikings finally received encouraging news on the injury front as they prepare for Sunday’s divisional game in Detroit. After weeks of uncertainty, quarterback J.J. McCarthy, left tackle Christian Darrisaw and edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel all practiced in full Wednesday, signaling Minnesota’s healthiest lineup since September.

J.J. McCarthy Set for Return in Crucial NFC North Matchup

McCarthy told reporters his ankle feels “amazing” and that he is ready to return after missing five games with a high ankle sprain. Kevin O’Connell confirmed that McCarthy is expected to start against the Lions, marking his first action in nearly six weeks. The Vikings hope the rookie’s mobility and improved pocket awareness will provide a spark for an offense that has struggled to sustain drives during his absence.

Darrisaw’s full participation also boosts confidence in an offensive line that has been in constant flux. The standout left tackle, who has battled lingering knee issues since last season, played only nine snaps against the Chargers before exiting. He said Monday that his early return may have been overly ambitious, but the team believes he is in a better place heading into Sunday’s matchup.

Andrew Van Ginkel’s Return Strengthens Vikings Defense

Van Ginkel practiced fully for the first time since Week 3 and expressed optimism about returning against Detroit. The linebacker has dealt with a neck injury and a concussion, which have limited him to eight snaps since early September. His speed and instincts are crucial to defensive coordinator Brian Flores’ system, which relies heavily on edge pressure and disciplined pursuit.

The Vikings’ defense was considered a team strength just weeks ago but has allowed 65 points in the past two weeks. Van Ginkel’s return could help Minnesota bounce back. The defense currently ranks eighth in PFSN’s DEFi.

Three other starters were limited on Wednesday: right tackle Brian O’Neill, pass rusher Jonathan Greenard, and cornerback Isaiah Rodgers. However, none of them are expected to be sidelined long-term. Tight end Josh Oliver, fullback C.J. Ham, and cornerback Jeff Okudah did not practice. O’Connell said Oliver will miss this week but avoided a significant injury.

With McCarthy healthy and both trenches finally stabilizing, Minnesota’s lineup is beginning to resemble the one it envisioned in training camp. For a team fighting to stay in the NFC playoff picture, that renewed health may be the spark the Vikings have been waiting for.
