Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said Wednesday that the organization is taking a detailed and deliberate approach to developing second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy. As the Vikings look to bounce back from a 27-19 loss to the Ravens, O’Connell stressed that growth and consistency remain the foundation of his team’s plan.
O’Connell Highlights Growth Process as Vikings Work Through Offensive Challenges
O’Connell said the evaluation process for McCarthy is ongoing, but it is grounded in patience. The offense is eager for consistency, ranking 27th in PFSN’s OFFi.
“It’s becoming more of a minute-to-minute, day-to-day judgment,” O’Connell said. “But my job is to coach in a way where no stone is unturned, recognizing progress and areas of improvement.”
He noted that consistency is the next step for McCarthy as he gains experience as a full-time starter. McCarthy, who popped up on the injury report with a hand injury, is set to make his fifth career start on Sunday against the Bears.

“What I look for is the ability to put routine things in that category of ‘I can expect them every time,’” O’Connell said. “Sometimes when a guy’s making his fourth or fifth start, that’s a lot to ask.”
The Vikings’ offense continues to show flashes but remains inconsistent outside of scripted drives. McCarthy has displayed strong command early in games but has struggled once defenses adjust, leading to missed opportunities and stalled drives. O’Connell said those challenges are expected as part of the quarterback’s development and can be corrected through repetition and better communication.
O’Connell also addressed the pre-snap penalties that hurt Minnesota in Sunday’s loss to Baltimore, calling them “catastrophic” and emphasizing that those issues fall on everyone, not just the quarterback.
“Nothing starts without us all getting off on the same cadence,” he said. “It got away from us in a pretty catastrophic way.”

The Vikings are 4-5 entering Week 11 and still fighting to stay in the NFC playoff picture. O’Connell said he remains encouraged by the team’s resilience despite offensive setbacks.
“We’re trying to go 1-0 this week,” he said. “There have been encouraging things along with others we can improve on. That’s where we are right now.”
