The scandal involving NFL insider Dianna Russini and New England Patriots reporter Mike Vrabel has taken the league by storm. Even during the 2026 NFL Draft, it continued to dominate headlines, and it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down as new information seems to surface daily.
Leaked photos and PR blunders have resulted in the two NFL figures sustaining massive reputational damage, and one football legend offered an insightful take on the situation.
Dianna Russini’s Life Will ‘Never Ever Be the Same,’ Argues NFL Legend Cris Carter
Russini suffered career damage to the point where she resigned from The Athletic amid the controversy. After facing severe public backlash for degrading comments about her husband and her failure to produce evidence of her supposed girls’ trip, what becomes of her career remains to be seen.
With plenty of question marks circling her future, Minnesota Vikings icon Cris Carter weighed in on the broader impact that the scandal has on Russini’s life on the “Fully Loaded Podcast.”
“I do know some people that have talked to Dianna, and this has been a horrific experience for her, like, life-altering in a negative way,” Carter said. “And it shouldn’t be that way. And the only reason that it is, is because she’s a female. This is a male-dominated world.”
Carter acknowledged that he has “an unusual amount of information on this particular subject” as someone who played in the NFL, worked at ESPN as on-air talent, and is married to a wife with deep ties in the media world’s makeup and wardrobe departments.
Off-field scandals happen all the time in the NFL. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has had his own controversy that he he had to navigate. Carter, however, believes the scales of justice are tilting unfairly against Russini.
“No one was surprised by the information,” Carter noted. “But to have her life altered and destroyed over having an affair with an NFL coach — I don’t care if he was a school teacher — that shouldn’t ruin or alter her career, and it has. So that’s why I’ll be very sensitive about the things that I do say because I know the trauma that she has gone through, and is going through on a daily basis, it’s real.”
Russini’s resignation after refusing to produce phone evidence to back her defense marked a major turning point in her career, and Carter is convinced her life will “never ever be the same.”
“Her life will never ever be the same,” he said. “And Vrabel’s life, personally, it might not be the same, but his football career won’t be altered. He should be getting some counseling anyway. But from a Robert Kraft standpoint, he’s not gonna change his contract.”
With many believing that Vrabel should face similar consequences for his actions, it remains to be seen if anything happens to him at all. The Patriots have stood by Vrabel, and the NFL has said that they won’t investigate the incident since they are treating it as a personal matter.
