Buried under Joe Flacco and rookie Dillon Gabriel on the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback depth chart, Shedeur Sanders’ NFL career hasn’t gotten off to the start he’d hoped for. One league icon shared his opinion on the former Colorado Buffaloes passer’s situation as Cleveland takes on the NFC North-leading Packers.
NFL Legend Sounds Off on Shedeur Sanders’ Browns Situation
Flacco is in his second tour with the Browns and his 18th season in the league overall. The Browns selected Gabriel in the 2025 NFL Draft before they called Sanders’ name, too. Because of this, Pro Football Hall of Fame tailback Eric Dickerson doesn’t think that Deion Sanders’ son is set up for success.
“I got it from an inside source, a guy who works for the National Football League,” Dickerson said.
“He got it from inside the league. I know they don’t care for his dad — and I think Deion is a great guy. Deion tries to help these young men become men, not boys — and I just feel like it was wrong what they did to him. You go to a team like the Browns, I mean, honestly, that’s not a good football team.
He continued, “I hate to see him there. I wish they would’ve cut him. The Browns have had so many first-round picks and screwed it up. I mean, that’s a bad football team. They were bad when I played.”

“It was wrong what the NFL did to him. The Browns, that’s not a good FB team. They are horrible. I hate to see him there. I wish they would have cut him. I’m not a Browns fan. I’m a Shedeur & Deion Sanders fan” https://t.co/elpDzZnCSe pic.twitter.com/QIyNHSgffc

The Browns lost their first two games to kick the new season off. Since 2020, Cleveland has gone 40-46 and reached the playoffs just twice. Even with the way the franchise cycles through signal-callers, Dickerson doesn’t think that Shedeur Sanders will be able to carve out a career for himself with the Browns.

“I don’t think he’s gonna get a fair shot there,” Dickerson said. “I don’t. Because I don’t think they really wanted him. I don’t think the coach wanted him… I’m not a Browns fan at all, so I could [sic] care less. But I’m a Shedeur fan. I’m a Deion Sanders fan.”
Sanders finished his college football career with 50 games played, 14,353 passing yards, 134 touchdowns and only 27 interceptions. He was a second-team Associated Press All-American as a senior and was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in the same campaign.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski and the Browns took Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round after a slide. He was projected to go early in the first round in several mock drafts, but had to wait until the third day to hear his name called.
