Entering the offseason, the Patriots were one of the favorites to make that happen, but it has not been a smooth ride so far.
Head coach Mike Vrabel was a part of a major NFL controversy centered around his connection with NFL insider Dianna Russini. Although preseason games are just around the corner, a scandal like the one centered around Vrabel does not just go away, and former Pittsburgh Steelers HC Mike Tomlin is well aware that the Patriots HC has some work to do right from the get-go.

Having any type of controversy or negative coverage surrounding a team is always a worrying sign before the season even begins. It takes focus away from the game and immediately becomes a distraction for a team, which, in the Patriots’ case, could be a factor in potentially wrecking their Super Bowl hopes.
When pictures of Vrabel and Russini were released to the world, and the controversy of their alleged relationship was uncovered, it took attention away from the work the Patriots were doing on the field.
This team added star WR A.J. Brown via trade, which should have been their top news of the offseason, but that’s clearly not the case.
There is also no guarantee that the Vrabel situation will affect the team, but the fact that there’s a chance is worrisome. During the NFL’s Hall of Fame Game between the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers, Mike Tomlin gave his take on the Vrabel situation, and in his opinion, it could get loud if things go wrong:
“I tell you, when games start, winning matters. So, if they get to a fast start, they got a chance to quiet some of that noise. If they don’t, that noise could get extremely loud.”

One of the popular phrases in sports is “winning cures everything,” and that’s what Tomlin is talking about in the quote above.
If the Patriots have a good start to the season and look like a Super Bowl contender, the scandal that plagued their offseason could dissipate into smoke. But that’s a big if.
If things don’t go their way, especially after adding A.J. Brown to the roster, the situation could take an ugly turn. Vrabel could become the face of New England’s problems, and depending on the Patriots’ level of trust in their HC, a change may not be out of the question.
