NFL Free Agency Rumors: Dolphins Have ‘Shown Interest’ in WR Jauan Jennings, But 1 Obstacle Is Preventing a Deal

Dolphins eye Jauan Jennings but cap space crunch blocks deal, leaving Miami waiting until June to make a serious free agency move.

The Miami Dolphins addressed several needs during the 2026 NFL Draft, but their roster still has clear gaps heading into the summer. Wide receiver remains one of the most pressing concerns after multiple departures and roster reshuffling.

With limited cap space, Miami has been cautious in free agency despite showing interest in available talent. One name that continues to surface is San Francisco 49ers wideout Jauan Jennings. However, while the interest is real, financial constraints are currently standing in the way of a potential deal.

Dolphins Reportedly Interested in Jauan Jennings but Face Salary Cap Roadblock

According to a report from the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, the Dolphins have been reportedly monitoring Jennings since free agency began, but a deal has yet to materialize due to financial limitations.

“According to a source, the Dolphins — since the start of free agency — have shown interest in 49ers free agent receiver Jauan Jennings. But they don’t have the money to meet his contractual wishes, and Sullivan has said Miami isn’t going to spend big in free agency after June 1,” the report noted.

The details here reflect a broader strategy from Miami, which appears focused on maintaining flexibility rather than committing major funds immediately.

The same report also outlined the team’s current cap situation and how it could evolve in the coming weeks.

“The Dolphins have just $1.8 million in cap space, but that will grow to about $22 million after Bradley Chubb’s release is processed June 2. Of that $22 million, Miami will need $10 million of cap space to sign its draft class, factoring in players who will no longer count on the cap after draft picks are signed,” the report mentioned.

Even with increased flexibility after June 1, the Dolphins will still need to allocate a huge portion of that space to incoming rookies, limiting their ability to pursue higher-priced veterans.

Jennings has developed into a reliable target over the past two seasons, making him an appealing option for a team in need of a physical receiver.

In 2024, he recorded 77 receptions for 975 yards and six touchdowns across 15 games. He followed that up in 2025 with 55 catches for 643 yards and a career-high nine touchdowns in another 15-game campaign.

From an analytical standpoint, Jennings posted a 71.1 score, ranking 77th among receivers, according to the PFSN WR Impact Metrics. His 643 receiving yards placed him 42nd overall, highlighting consistent but not elite production across the season.

Miami’s need for reinforcements becomes clearer when looking at its offensive performance. According to the PFSN Offense Impact Metrics, they posted a 73.1 score, ranking 19th in the league and placing them firmly in the middle tier.

Their overall offensive grading came in at a C, with a long-term rank of 492, underscoring the need for additional playmakers to elevate the unit. The Dolphins finished the 2025 season with a 7-10 record, reflecting inconsistent play on offense.

With key departures, including star Jaylen Waddle, reshaping the receiving corps, Jennings could realistically step in as a primary option if signed. His size and red-zone effectiveness align with what Miami currently lacks.
