Ahead of training camp, the Cleveland Browns looked like a team headed for some semblance of significant change. With new head coach Todd Monken, the franchise hopes to erase the bitter taste of another losing season. Now, as hope springs eternal, Monken wants to place his stamp on the team. Today, he named Deshaun Watson as his starting quarterback.
In response, Watson offered his thoughts in his postgame comments, including a special message to the fanbase after he lashed out at them following the preseason loss against the Buffalo Bills. After his apology, social media buzzed with reactions and replies to Watson. Most of the trending conversation is on one side of the argument.

The Bills walked into Cleveland to easily dispatch the Browns, 31-7, in front of a very angry Cleveland crowd.
After Saturday’s game, Watson blasted fans for booing him. As mentioned, Monken named Watson the starter. Watson took to the microphones to apologize for his comments. Social media did not want to hear any sort of mea culpa.

From perusing the Browns’ social media space, many feel as though Watson only apologized due to being named starter and organizational pressure. Some fans lashed out, leaving niceties out of the conversation.

“Too (expletive) late,” another fan added. “(expletive) Your/the Browns PR team got to you after and told you you(expletive) up. You don’t mean a word of it. Boo him off the field.”
From all indications, the Cleveland faithful did not want Watson to start and picked apart the apology. Additionally, that could also hark back to Watson’s past.

While public relations spin could be considered a factor, the thought of questioning Watson’s role on the team and his relationship with teammates comes into focus.

Furthermore, Watson’s 9-10 career record in Cleveland is not lost on their supporters.

From the reason the NFL suspended Watson in the first place to his struggles to remain healthy, his lucrative contract still rankles fans.
Browns fans, known across the NFL for extended periods of suffering, see Watson as the embodiment of what they feel is wrong with the franchise.
“He doesn’t mean it, he came here for the money and nothing else,” said one fan on X. “How much suffering do we have to go through in order for this team to have some common sense? THIS MARRIAGE HAS SOURED.”
Watson will enter the Browns with second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders as his backup. Whether this stays in place or changes with results remains to be seen as Monken prepares to coach an offense which ranked worst in the league last year on PFN’s Offense Impact Metric.
