The NFL world was caught off guard after the New England Patriots traded wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans in a surprising player-for-player deal.
According to The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero, Houston is sending safety Jaylen Reed to New England along with a draft pick for Boutte.
Analysts and Reporters Were Quick To React to Kayshon Boutte Trade
The trade comes one week after Texans WR Jayden Higgins suffered a season-ending ACL injury. Higgins was expected to have a major role as Houston’s WR2 behind Nico Collins, leaving the team looking for another outside threat.
On the other hand, Boutte had already been linked with the Texans before the Higgins injury. Houston had reportedly explored acquiring him, although the two sides had previously appeared too far apart on the price.
The move finally happened, with Ian Rapoport reporting that the Texans sent their 2028 seventh-round pick along with Reed to bring Boutte to Houston.

Patriots reporter Mark Daniels said, “Patriots add safety depth. Sad to see Boutte go, but he gets what he wanted.”

“Boutte has been freed,” added a DFS account on X.
Analyst Joey Murray said, “I never want to trade a WR you developed,” indicating at how Patriots weren’t able to keep Boutte.

Boutte’s departure should not come as a massive surprise to New England. The Patriots had already added A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs to a receiver room that also features DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism III.
The 24-year-old wideout is coming off his best NFL season. Boutte caught 33 passes for 551 yards and 6 touchdowns in 14 regular-season games for the Patriots in 2025, averaging 16.7 yards per reception. He ranked No. 40 with an impact score of 74.4 on PFN’s WR Impact Rankings.
Boutte’s role had become less certain in New England after the additions of Brown and Doubs. He had also been the subject of trade speculation for much of the offseason.
Meanwhile, for Houston, the timing could hardly be more obvious. Higgins’ ACL injury has left a hole opposite Collins. Tank Dell and Jaylin Noel are also expected to factor into the Texans’ passing attack, although both have dealt with injuries. Boutte now gets a chance to compete for a much bigger role in Houston alongside Collins and quarterback C.J. Stroud.
Reed, meanwhile, leaves Houston after spending two seasons with the Texans. The 23-year-old safety was a sixth-round pick in 2025 and appeared in seven regular-season games as a rookie. He recorded 14 tackles and a fumble recovery.
