‘Keep Your Leverage’ — Rival NFL Executive Warns Texans to Pump Brakes on C.J. Stroud’s Massive Extension

A rival AFC executive told ESPN that the Houston Texans should wait on C.J. Stroud's extension after the quarterback's recent playoff struggles.

C.J. Stroud burst onto the scene in 2023 with an outstanding rookie season. The No. 2 overall pick threw for 4,108 yards, won Offensive Rookie of the Year, and led the Houston Texans to a playoff win.

Three years later, the trajectory looks far less certain as Stroud’s production has dipped in each subsequent season. His recent postseason ended with 7 turnovers across two games, including a 4-interception meltdown in a 28-16 Divisional Round loss to the New England Patriots. Now extension-eligible for the first time, Stroud is not expected to get a long-term deal from the Texans anytime soon.

AFC Executive Claims Texans Should Wait on C.J. Stroud’s Extension

Houston picked up Stroud’s fifth-year option, which will pay the quarterback $25.9 million in 2027 on top of his $5.697 million salary this season. General manager Nick Caserio called the move “kind of a no-brainer,” but notably declined to discuss extension timelines.

The Texans’ patience isn’t going unnoticed around the league. According to ESPN, one AFC executive endorsed Houston’s approach, arguing that the fifth-year option gives the organization room to evaluate without committing long-term capital.

“It hasn’t been perfect,” the AFC executive told ESPN. “That defense has carried a lot, $25 million isn’t crazy for the [fifth-year] option, so you keep your leverage, get another year of info on durability, production, mental toughness, all of it.”

According to PFSN’s Defense Impact Metric, the Texans’ defense ranked second in the league last season with an impact score of 89.4. Will Anderson Jr. also just signed a three-year, $150 million extension, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. His deal indicates that the Texans will continue to build around their defense, and Stroud has to prove his worth.

With 11 quarterbacks currently earning $50 million or more per year, Stroud would need a strong 2026 to justify pushing toward that tier. His Divisional Round record stands at 0-3, and his completion percentage in those games sits at 53% with just 1 touchdown against 4 interceptions.

In 14 games last season, the Texans star threw for 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions, while completing 64.5% of his throws. According to PFSN’s QB Impact Metric, Stroud posted an impact score of 76.2 last season, ranking 19th in the league.

If Stroud plays well behind an overhauled offensive line featuring Braden Smith and Wyatt Teller, his price will go up. Houston would pay more for certainty, but if he struggles again, the Texans can either negotiate at a discount or pivot entirely and get a new quarterback.

The Texans’ formidable defense gives Stroud every opportunity to succeed. He doesn’t need to carry the franchise; he just needs to protect the football and let the players around him do their jobs.

It will be interesting to see whether the fourth-year quarterback can deliver the kind of clean, consistent play that turns a fifth-year option into a commitment worth well north of $200 million.
