Right now, a Kevin Durant trade seems inevitable — it’s just a question of when it will happen, not whether it will happen at all. According to several credible reports, the veteran NBA star is interested in playing for the San Antonio Spurs, and it appears to be a strong fit for him.
However, the issue lies on the Suns’ end. Phoenix is reportedly making headlines for the steep asking price they’ve placed on Durant in trade discussions with the Spurs.
Suns Reportedly Demand Huge Haul for Kevin Durant From Spurs
One thing is confirmed for now: the former MVP is likely to be traded. And yes, his preferred three teams remain the same: the Spurs, Houston Rockets, and Miami Heat. Some reports also claimed the Minnesota Timberwolves were a possible destination, but Durant reportedly has no interest in playing there.
At this point, the Suns appear willing to trade him to another team if the return is strong enough. The asking price seems steep, and new general manager Brian Gregory is under pressure to get maximum value for Durant. No matter where he ends up, the deal must match what the Suns are asking for.
According to The Ringer, Phoenix wants either the No. 2 overall pick or rookie Stephon Castle from the Spurs in any trade. If you ask us, we will say that’s a lot. However, if Durant truly commits to San Antonio long-term, it could be worth the steep price.
Appearing on The Ringer’s “The Zach Lowe Show,” analyst Kirk Goldsberry said, “Our friends in San Antonio think the price is too high … the original discussions including the No. 2 pick and/or Stephon Castle are not going very well on the Spurs’ end of the telephone.”

The Suns are standing strong after a tough 2024–25 season. Even though Durant scored an impressive 26.6 points per game, the team still missed the playoffs. Now, with Durant turning 36 and entering the last year of his contract, Phoenix wants a big return.
They’re looking for a trade package similar to what they gave up in 2023, which included Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, and several first-round picks.
The Spurs, in turn, are interested but remain cautious. They don’t want to give up Stephon Castle, the No. 4 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, or their valuable No. 2 pick this year. Even though Durant likes San Antonio, the Spurs are careful not to trade away key future assets for a veteran whose contract is nearing its end.
So yes, the Suns are holding firm, but the Spurs are hesitant to give up their future-proof assets. This could stall the deal unless Phoenix lowers its demands or another team jumps in with a better offer.
